When Disney announced that The Mandalorian would be the first episode on its new streaming service, the show’s hero looked quite familiar. His famous armor, first worn by a fan-favorite bounty hunter with Han Solo in his sights, has been a beloved component of Star Wars history for decades. Boba Fett: The TV Show was as near to a surefire hit as a fledgling streamer could hope for.
After months of conjecture and rumors, the Mandalorian season 2 episode 1 verified what we’d all suspected Boba Fett is back in action in the Star Wars world. The show’s final scene featured a familiar face after town marshal Cobb Vanth arrived on Tatooine wearing Boba Fett’s iconic battle gear. That of Temuera Morrison, who played Boba Fett’s ‘father,’ Jango Fett, in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones. Boba Fett is still a force to be reckoned with in the galaxy far, far away.
The famed bounty hunter reappeared in ‘Chapter 14: The Tragedy,’ this time in his Slave I ship, demanding Mando’s armor back and becoming the titular protagonist’s impromptu partner in a deadly battle with the Empire.
Of course, the last time we saw Fett in Return of the Jedi, he was being consumed by the all-powerful Sarlacc. So, how did he make it out alive? What is he up to these days? And what is Fett’s significance to Star?
Boba Fett: a fictional character.
Boba Fett was the most feared bounty hunter in the galaxy around the time of the original Star Wars trilogy. Fett was one of the six mercenaries by Darth Vader to find Han Solo in The Empire Strikes Back and was a favorite of Jabba the Hutt. He’s the one who eventually tracks the Millennium Falcon to Bespin, earns the reward on Solo, and returns his prize (frozen in Carbonite) to Jabba’s palace on Tatooine.
Despite their similar fashion taste, Boba Fett’s origins differ from those of Din Djarin, the titular Mandalorian from the Disney Plus TV show. Djarin is a foundling who Mandalorians raised to follow the rules of the world of Mandalore’s famous warrior creed — for example, he must never remove his helmet in front of others.
Boba Fett is a bounty hunter who happens to be wearing the customized Mandalorian armor that his’ father,’ Jango Fett, passed down to him.
Fett Sr, like Din Djarin, was a Mandalorian orphan who the Mandalorians took in. They handed him his armor, and he fought in the Mandalorian Civil Wars.
Jango was one of the galaxy’s most dreaded bounty hunters at the time of the prequel trilogy. His DNA was good to create the Clone Troopers, who was in fight for the Republic in the Clone Wars. The unconditioned clone who would grow up to become Boba Fett was Jango’s ‘payment.’ On Geonosis, Jango was murdered by Mace Windu in the fight that started the Clone Wars.
Boba Fett in The Mandalorian Season 2 and 1?
After falling into the Sarlacc pit during Return of the Jedi, the legendary bounty hunter was considered dead. His presence in the Disney+ show, on the other hand, revealed that he was still alive but without his iconic armor. While it’s unknown whether Boba will see Mando in Season 2, a fresh leak says the character will return alongside a legendary craft from the first trilogy. We’d already seen (and heard) Boba Fett in season 1, episode 5, ‘The Gunslinger,’ of The Mandalorian. The sound of spurs (along with some similar beeps) led many to believe that the enigmatic individual. The one who discovered Fennec Shand’s body was Fett himself. We noticed this right when we saw a largely cybernetic Shand, now serving Boba Fett, in Chapter 14 of The Mandalorian.
Cobb Vanth, marshal of Mos Pelgo, wore armor that looked eerily familiar in the season 2 opener of The Mandalorian. While he didn’t wear it as well as its previous owner — the chest plate looks like an ill-fitting tank top – it was unmistakably Boba Fett’s former suit, albeit with a little more wear and tear.

Vanth bought it from a bunch of Jawas, we later discovered. We don’t know how they got it, but it’s plausible to believe they found it scavenging in the Tatooine desert. And, given that they’re unlikely to have raided the Sarlacc’s stomach, it’s reasonable to suppose Fett escaped the beast’s digestive system.
The closing scene of the season 2 premiere verified this idea, as we saw a familiar-looking man clothed in dark robes. Temuera Morrison plays the character, who previously played Jango Fett and the Clone Troopers in the prequel films and Boba Fett in the more recent re-releases of the original trilogy.
In Chapter 14, we learned that this figure was the real deal: Boba Fett returned to Din Djarin to retrieve his armor, identifying himself as Jango’s son.
How did Boba Fett manage to escape the Sarlacc?
That, my friends, is the million-dollar question. While fans have long suspected that the Sarlacc wouldn’t be able to keep Fett imprisoned eternally. The Mandalorian is the first in-canon evidence that he did.
Nonetheless, Boba Fett has to fight another day in both the Dark Horse comic book line. And the old Expanded Universe books. Now consigned to the non-canon Legends line – so this isn’t the first time he’s now out alive.
Tom Veitch and Cam Kennedy’s Dark Empire comics from the early 1990s indicated that Fett was still alive. “The Sarlacc found me somewhat indigestible.” In the meantime, J.D. Montgomery’s 1996 short fiction ‘A Barve Like That: The Tale of Boba Fett’ from Tales from Jabba’s Palace went further.
An immobile Fett gains telepathic contact with Susejo, the first of the Sarlacc’s captives, who has some control over their captor. The injured Fett then causes the Sarlacc’s stomach to compress. This is allowing him to escape by blowing a hole in its insides with his jetpack and concussion grenades. Jawas mistakenly believed Fett for a robot later discovered him.
It’s unclear whether any of this background will get it into The Mandalorian since Disney-era Lucasfilm. It has a habit of repurposing plum moments from the old expanded universe.
