Following the success of Scream 5, 2022, Wes Craven’s darkly hilarious 1996 slasher classic pays homage to the original while introducing a new generation of characters to a new generation of fans – a sixth-generation installment of the Scream franchise is in the works.
Melissa Berrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, and Jenna Ortega, new franchise members who survived the most recent Ghostface killings in Scream 5, are set to return in Scream 6.
Hayden Panettiere, who appeared in 2011’s Scream 4, will reprise her role in the bloody sequel, while Courtney Cox, who played Gale Weathers in the first film, has also confirmed her return.
However, one of the prominent cast members will not return in Scream 6.
Neve Campbell, who has played the lead character Sidney Prescott in all five previous Scream films, most recently in Scream 5, has withdrawn from the upcoming Scream sequel due to a financial dispute. Read on to learn more about the cast.

Scream Season 6 Release Date:
Scream 6 will be released in theatres on March 31, 2023.
This indicates the film will be released a little over 14 months after Scream 5, which was released in theatres on January 14, 2022.

Scream Season 6 Cast:
As previously stated, Melissa Berrera’s Sam Carpenter, Jasmin Savoy Brown’s Mindy Meeks-Martin, Mason Gooding’s Chad Meeks-Martin, and Jenna Ortega’s Tara Carpenter – all of whom survived Scream 5 – are all set to return in the next chapter to face Ghostface (with Roger L. Jackson reprising his role as the sinister voice).
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Dermot Mulroney (My Best Friend’s Wedding) has joined the cast of Scream 6.
In addition to Mulroney and the four leads from Scream 5, Hayden Panettiere, who played Kirby Reed in 2011’s Scream 4, will star in the slasher sequel.
Courtney Cox, who played Gale Weathers in the original Scream, has also confirmed her comeback.
“Sadly, I won’t be making the next Scream film,” Campbell said in a statement to Variety. “As a woman, I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially regarding Scream. I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise.”
She continued: “It’s been a tough decision to move on. To all my Scream fans, I love you. You’ve always been so incredibly supportive to me, and I’m forever grateful to you and to what this franchise has given me over the past 25 years.”
After his character Dewey Riley was brutally murdered by Ghostface in Scream 5, things aren’t looking suitable for key Scream cast member David Arquette.
Riley wasn’t the only returning Scream character to die horribly in Scream 5, as Judy Hicks, portrayed by Marley Shelton, and her son Wes, played by Dylan Minnette, were also killed off.
Liv McKenzie (Sonia Ammar), Vince Schneide (Kyle Gallner), Richie Kirsch (Jack Quaid), and Amber Freeman (Mikey Madison) were also killed off.
Scream Season 6 plot:
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film’s storyline description suggests that it “continues with the four survivors of the Ghostface killings as they leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter.” While the specifics are being kept under wraps, the upcoming episode will follow the four confirmed cast members, Ortega, Barrera, Gooding, and Brown, as they depart Woodsboro in search of a new beginning.
Unfortunately, because this is a sequel to Scream, their expectations for a quiet existence appear improbable.
Cox earlier praised the writing for Scream 6 in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, saying: “I don’t know about contracts and where things are, but I’ll tell you in the script — it’s a perfect one.”
She added: “You actually have to be killed if you talk about it, so I’m not gonna say anything.”

That’ll be a vast improvement.
Even if much of the cast has been murdered off. And it would be tough to persuade the legacy characters to return. Well, the idea of Sam struggling with the horror of her history could open up new paths for the franchise. “is it even a ‘Halloween’ movie without Jamie Lee?” asks another character earlier in the film.
