Additionally, he has held positions on the advisory boards of the Brookings Institution and the Yale School of Management.

Lamont announced his bid to unseat incumbent Joe Lieberman for the U.S. Senate on March 13, 2006.

On July 6, Lamont and Lieberman engaged in a live television debate about various topics, including the Iraq War, energy policy, and immigration. So, Lieberman claimed he was being put to the test in the argument over the war, asserted he was a “bread-and-butter Democrat,” and frequently questioned who Ned Lamont was. With 52% of the vote, Lamont won the primary(this was the only Senate race in 2006 where an incumbent lost re-nomination).

Lieberman declared in his concession address that he was sticking by his earlier claims that if he lost the primary, he would run as an independent. Lieberman won the primary election while campaigning under the Connecticut party’s banner with approximately 50% of the vote (exit polls showed Lieberman won 33 percent of Democrats, 54 percent of independents, and 70 percent of Republicans). His father, an economist, worked on the Marshall Plan before working in the Nixon administration’s Department of Housing and Urban Development. So, he is Thomas W. Lamont’s great-grandson, the former chairman of J. P. Morgan & Co.. Also, the founder and grand-nephew of the National Council of American-Soviet Friendship, Corliss Lamont, a former director of the American Civil Liberties Union. So, he inherited his middle name from colonial diarist Thomas Minor, a distant ancestor.
