The release date for M. Night Shyamalan’s upcoming film has been out, and you’re twisty as hell pal is returning to the genre that he loves the most: horror. While there isn’t much information available regarding “Knock at the Cabin,” some hints are online that give us a better idea of what to anticipate from the surprise ending director.
Of course, in true Shyamalan fashion, nothing is what it seems, so we anticipate that our understanding of the film will evolve considerably when additional information becomes available.

Both actors were former cast members of Shyamalan’s Apple TV+ series “Servant.” Ben Aldridge (“Pennyworth,” “Fleabag”) and Jonathan Groff (“The Matrix Resurrections,” “Mindhunter”) round out the already famous cast members, though there will undoubtedly be other additions.
Jarin Blaschke (“The Lighthouse,” “Servant,” “The Northman”) will serve as the film’s director of photography in “Knock at the Cabin,” which was also, directed, and produced by Shyamalan. Shyamalan seems to be dipping his toes into the traditional cabin horror genre based on the title. You know, like “Cabin Fever” by Eli Roth, “The Evil Dead” by Sam Raimi, or “The Cabin in the Woods” by Joss Whedon. There are many cabin-themed horror films out there, but Shyamalan hasn’t made one yet, so it’ll be fascinating to see how he makes it his own, if I’m correct, and the title is a reference to that subgenre.
Bloody Disgusting reported that they’ve heard the movie will at the very least be a “home invasion horror film that takes place during the apocalypse,” which suggests some fascinating new territory for the contentious director and might evoke comparisons to the excellent “10 Cloverfield Lane” or even Jordan Peele’s “Us.”
The only thing we can expect from a Shyamalan film is the unexpected, but I’m hoping this one errs more toward the intense terror of “The Visit” than the bombastic atmosphere of “Split.” Even though Shyamalan enjoys going all out and including everything in his films except the kitchen sink, it pays off when he exercises restraint.

The novel “The Cabin at the End of the World” has a similar premise, but “Knock at the Cabin” reports have been nothing more than that – rumors. However, the author has since confirmed this link to Paul Tremblay’s 2018 book. In an interview with CNBC, Tremblay acknowledged that all parties had a legal obligation to keep this information secret until this point (via Bloody Disgusting). As he clarified: “I signed an option with FilmNation in late 2017. The production team then searched for a director and another talent to attach. While another director was briefly attached, I’d heard that Night had read the screenplay and was in possibly producing. The night was still interested in producing when it didn’t work out with the first director, which made him want to rewrite the script and direct it.”
“I have no contractual say over the screenplay or filming,” leaving Shyamalan free to filter the story through his sensibilities as he sees fit. Though admitting that this will take some adjustments on his part, the author is taking this in stride: “Like the majority of adaptations, there will be story changes and differences compared to the book, so my readers will still be surprised by the film.”

A new trailer for the movie will probably be out in the upcoming weeks or months as the cut sharpens. The movie is currently firmly in the post-production stage.
