The A24 horror gods gave the public a gift in March 2022 when Ti West (The Innkeepers, House of the Devil) unveiled his most recent work, X.
In movie X, Mia Goth plays a young woman named Maxine “Max” Minx who wants to become a well-known adult film actress. With her producer/boyfriend Wayne (Martin Henderson), the pornstars Bobby-Lynn (Brittany Snow), Jackson Hole (Scott Mescudi/Kid Cudi), the director RJ (Owen Campbell), and RJ’s girlfriend Lorraine, Max traveled through Texas in 1979. (Jenna Ortega).
When they locate a farmhouse that meets their needs, they approach the elderly owner, Howard (Stephen Ure), and request to rent his guest home. Soon after they start filming, they see Pearl, Howard’s wife, acting strangely and erratically. Howard reveals that Pearl has dementia and battles sundowning syndrome as a result.
Because both movies are set in 1970s rural Texas, they resemble one another quite. Both films feature numerous graphic death sequences, and their depictions of farmhouses are uncannily similar. Even the opening scene of X is eerily similar to that of the Texas Chain Saw Massacre, with the cops inspecting the horrific aftermath of the events.
However, the beauty of youth, sensuality, and nostalgia is more the central themes of the film X. Pearl’s self-worth declined as she grew older, and she developed resentment and violent tendencies against the youthful visitors staying on her land. Mia Goth plays the young, attractive Max and the wrinkled, elderly Pearl in this film.
After the credits, a trailer for West’s upcoming film, Pearl, intended to be a prequel to X, was shown. We had no idea at the time that Pearl and X had been covertly shot concurrently to shorten the time between their releases. Before Pearl is released, you can learn everything you need to know from this post.
Pearl Release date
The movie Pearl will debut only in theatres on Friday, September 16, 2022. We can only infer that Pearl will be accessible for purchase on streaming services sometime in October based on the time range from X’s release dates.
The cast of Pearl
Naturally, Mia Goth will return to reprise her role as Pearl in her childhood. Her husband from the original movie, Howard, will be played by a younger David Corenswet (The Politician).
The cast list includes Tandi Wright from The Wilds, Matthew Sunderland from The Nightingale, and Emma Jenkins-Purro from Bygones, all of whom have unidentified parts. The clip shows that Sunderland and Wright will play the oppressive mother and Pearl’s father, who uses a wheelchair, respectively. It appears that Emma Jenkins-Purro will play a role in which Pearl will view her as a rival.
Ti West wrote, produced, and directed Pearl, much as he did with X. Jacob Jaffke, Kevin Turen, and Harrison Kreiss, who were all producers for X as well, are his co-producers.
Pearl is being produced and distributed by A24 in collaboration with Little Lamb productions.
The plot of Pearl
The simplest way to describe it is “an X-traordinary genesis narrative.” Pearl will serve as a prologue to X, focusing on Pearl’s life in 1918, during World War I, when she was still young and attractive. It will go deeper into the reasons behind her heinous deeds in X. The new film will also include the farmhouse where the X Massacre occurred, which was converted into a boarding house during the war.
Nothing will stop Pearl from leaving her small town and becoming a well-known movie actress everyone adores.
Trailer
Yes, in addition to the post-credit teaser that debuted with the X screening, West has unveiled a complete trailer for his forthcoming movie. The trailer is accessible above.
That trailer has a lot to unpack. Let’s dissect it. We witness Pearl pleading to become “the biggest star” to escape her present situation, and she has several challenges in pursuing that objective.
She is initially charged with farm work and caring for her father, who is crippled. Her mother also comes off as a little pushy and strongly opposes Pearl leaving the farm.
She faces opposition as well. When Pearl appears for an audition, a nearby girl informs her that “they only take one gal per town.”
But she has Howard, probably before the two of them got married, in her corner. He encourages her to have a self-determined life. Additionally, he shows her an adult movie from that era and informs her that it is a movie none else has seen and that, ultimately, it will be legal. Ironically, that is precisely the subject of the story of X, its antecedent.
On top of all this, we witness Pearl using a pitchfork to kill a goose and feed it to the alligator in her pond while shoving her father to the dock’s very edge.
There appears to be no shortage of gore and bloodshed in this film, but it’s difficult to tell from the trailer alone what is genuine and what scenes are only Pearl’s daydreams.
