Hulu hasn’t been holding back when it comes to the horror genre, despite being now owned by the normally family-friendly Walt Disney Company after purchasing 20th Century Fox and all of its properties. Just this year, Hulu debuted the eagerly awaited Predator prequel Prey (2022), which has since received a tonne of love from both audiences and reviewers and became the premiere of an original film that has garnered the most attention on Hulu. Since the first movie in the series was out in 1987, Prey has almost generally been famous as its greatest instalment.
This October, Hulu will also bring back another popular franchise famed for its tolerance of suffering. When Clive Barker’s twisted horror novel Hellraiser (1987) was published, it immediately became a cult favourite, elevating Pinhead and his band of Cenobites to the status of iconic horror movie killers.

It takes a sad, unsettling, deliberate look at the risks associated with enjoying suffering; ludicrous, cartoonish kills are with some superbly, practical body horror. The cast of Hellraiser
Pinhead will be this time by Sense8 star Jamie Clayton, marking the first time a woman has worn the iconic pins. Clive Barker, who created Pinhead, detests the name and prefers the title of Hell Priest. This is undoubtedly the biggest information we currently have on the new Hellraiser. It has was happening before that Pinhead’s role. Doug Bradley, who played Pinhead in all but the most recent two Hellraiser movies, is unquestionably the first and most well-known Pinhead actor. Hellraiser: Revelations (2011) starred Paul T. Taylor (Super) as Hellraiser and Stephen Smith Collins (Criminal Minds) as Pinhead.
We don’t yet know the identities of the other human victims or, possibly, Pinhead’s fellow Cenobites, but we do know the rest of the group. They include Predrag Bjelac (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), Hiam Abbass (Blade Runner 2049), Adam Faison (13 Reasons Why), Odessa A’zion (Supercool), Selena Lo (Boss Level), Aofie Hinds (Normal People), and Goran Visnjic (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) (Into the Dark). Several directors have been in to the storied franchise since rumours of a new Hellraiser movie first surfaced in 2007. Some examples include Martyrs director Pascal Laugier and the directing duo Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury, well-known for their 2017 film Leatherface. Years later, David Bruckner became the director of choice for the project. He has a strong track record in the horror genre, having made successful films like V/H/S (2012), The Ritual (2017), and The Night House (2020). Along with a narrative by David S. Goyer, Bruckner will also reunite with screenwriters Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski, whom he previously collaborated with on The Night House (The Dark Knight).
The plot of Hellraiser
Whether this will follow the established Hellraiser chronology of the first ten movies or break new ground is still up for debate, although the idea of a “requel” isn’t unheard of in the horror genre. The major franchises Halloween, Candyman, and even Terminator (yes, it counts as horror) maintained the original movie canonical while eliminating most, if not all, of the other sequels.
The official plot summary for the movie is as follows: In this reimagining of Clive Barker’s seminal Hellraiser franchise, a young woman must confront the sadistic, supernatural forces behind a mysterious puzzle box responsible for her brother’s disappearance.
The idea that this could be a clean slate is entirely possible because the film’s cast list currently consists of actors who are entirely new to the franchise.
