The Wonder, Florence Pugh’s brand-new psychological thriller on Netflix, has been set for later this year.

The actress plays a nurse sent to a town to study an 11-year-old child in the new film, which is inspired by a book by Room’s Emma Donoghue.

The wonder will now officially premiere on the streaming service in December after having a limited theatrical run in November, according to the streamer.

According to the summary, a small girl stops eating in the Irish Midlands in 1862 but miraculously survives and is unharmed. A little community invites English nurse Lib Wright to examine 11-year-old Anna O’Donnell.

The Wonder’s influence from real-life

The Wonder, a 2016 book by author Emma Donoghue (opens in new tab), was motivated by the actual occurrence known as “the starving girls.” These were females who claimed they didn’t need food to exist, as was reported throughout Europe. One such “fasting girl” was Welsh 12-year-old Sarah Jacob in the 19th century, who went more than two years without eating.

The Wonder has all the qualities that Netflix is seeking in the U.K. and Ireland film: a deep, genuine tale that originates here, as well as artistic quality in the source material, writing, director, and performers,” Lamptey continued. A crucial objective for the film slate we are establishing here is to provide chances for U.K. and Irish talent like Florence in ambitious, distinctive stories of scale that are ingrained in our terrain.

Over two million copies of Emma Donoghue’s first book, Room, have been sold. In 2015, the book was turned into a wonder starring Brie Larson, who received an Oscar for the role.

The Wonder’s story

Ireland in 1862 is the setting for The Wonder. A skeptical English nurse named Lib Wright (Florence Pugh) is asked to visit a small town to see and confirm what some people are calling a miracle. Anna O’Donnell (Kla Lord Cassidy), an 11-year-old girl who is extremely devout, is reported to have survived for months on nothing but “manna from heaven.” A journalist is covering the story as tourists pour into Anna’s cabin, but is everything really as it seems?

She is increasingly anxious to learn the truth as Lib and a nun alternately watch the girl see if she is genuinely eating and, if not, how she manages to survive without food. However, as soon as she and Anna become close, Lib is faced with the choice of discovering the truth about this miracle or averting Anna’s life’s demise.

Beginning on Friday, November 16, 2022, Netflix will provide The Wonder in all countries. On Tuesday, September 13, 2022, the film made its world debut at the Toronto Film Festival.
