The central government has come up with the concept of ‘electric highway’, and as per their plan, the electric highway will be built between the cities of Delhi and Rajasthan. The Union minister of road transport and highways, Nitin Gadkari said on Friday that the government is planning to work with a foreign company to build the electric highway – his “dream” project – between these two cities. Also as per the plan, the construction work might start very soon if the discussions come through. Along with the Delhi-Jaipur stretch, another electric highway may also be in their plan which will be constructed between Delhi and Mumbai, and talks are on with a Swedish company.
If this plan of electric highway gets successful then we can have vehicles powered by electricity ply on the stretch – the first of these will be between Delhi to Jaipur. If that project is also successful then the Delhi-Mumbai stretch will come into existence too. As per Union minister Nitin Gadkari, electric vehicles do not only include small road vehicles but also Buses, trucks, and railway engines may also be in the list of vehicles powered by electricity. The minister said that it was his dream to build an electric highway in India. Well, talking about this particular project it is still in the proposal stage. He said “It is my dream to build an electric highway from Delhi to Jaipur,” the PTI news agency quoted Gadkari as saying. “It is still a proposed project. We are in discussion with a foreign company.”
Being the transport minister, he has taken the resolution to eventually bring an end to the use of petrol and diesel and to bring electric vehicles (EV) into existence in India. The electric motors for propulsion can be powered with the help of an electric current collector system just like the overhead lines or electric third rails powering trams or electric locomotives. A battery can be charged by solar panels or by converting fuel to electricity using fuel cells or by using a generator, and any other extravehicular sources of power.
If the project becomes a success then electronic vehicles will not be limited to road vehicles. India can then have electrically powered railways, aircraft, spacecraft, and even underwater vessels. Currently, this project is also known as one of the 100 best contemporary solutions to address climate change. The government also thinks that the project will reduce conventional transportation’s drastic impact on global warming and the environment. Well this year, the International Energy Agency (IAE) said that world governments must have more to meet climate goals with policies that favor electric vehicles. The steps taken by India to plan electric highways will surely be helpful.
