Multiple Supreme Court rulings in the context of Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code have explaine

a breakup does not constitute abetment to suicide unless one party actively instigates the other for the act (IPC).

After the suicide of TV actress Tunisha Sharma in Mumbai, and the subsequent arrest of her ex-boyfriend Sheezan Mohammed Khan under Section 306

the discussion surrounding this issue has been reignited.

If convicted, the offender faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison.

According to the NCRB report for 2021, there were only 8,312 cases filed under Section 306 and a conviction rate of 22.6%.

A total of nearly 7,500 "love affair"-related suicides were reported in India in 2016, according to the NCRB report.
