Sam Raimi introduced the series with The Evil Dead, a low-budget shocker that has been hailed as one of the most important cult movies in the history of the genre. It was schlocky and grisly to an extreme degree, but it worked incredibly well.
With the scares quickly giving way to humour and fantasy elements, Raimi returned with Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness. With the release of Evil Dead in 2013, the series had a reboot, which was well-received by fans and showered the audience with excessive amounts of blood.
Here’s what we currently know about the upcoming film in the series, Evil Dead Rise, including its release date, trailer, cast, and plot. It’s expected to be the scariest in the series so far.
Release Date
The premiere of Evil Dead Rise is scheduled for April 21, 2023. The sequel was initially scheduled for an HBO Max-only debut. It was nevertheless given a theatrical release following the merger of Warner Bros. Discovery and the appointment of David Zaslav as CEO.
You’ll have to go to the theatre to see it since HBO Max won’t start streaming it the day it is released.

Star Cast of Evil Dead Rise
Evil Dead Rise has a known cast that includes: Alyssa Sutherland as Ellie. The cast also includes Tai Wano, Jayden Daniels, Gabrielle Echols, Morgan Davies, Nell Fisher, Mia Challis as Jessica, Billy Reynolds-McCarthy, and Lily Sullivan as Beth.
None of the characters from 2013’s Evil Dead are anticipated to return, unless they make a brief cameo, and Campbell is not planned to star, but an appearance wouldn’t be all that unexpected, even as a passing gesture.
Storyline for Evil Dead Rise
According to the movie’s official synopsis, “In the fifth Evil Dead movie, a road-weary Beth pays an overdue visit to her elder sister Ellie, who is raising three children by herself in a small L.A. apartment.”
The sisters’ reunion is interrupted when a mysterious book found deep inside Ellie’s building summons flesh-eating demons and forces Beth to engage in a primitive struggle for survival while experiencing the nightmare that is motherhood.
This book will be the Necronomicon, the central Book of the Dead in the Evil Dead series. Rise marks a considerable shift from the series, though.
According to writer-director Lee Cronin, “There is no Ash in this story and there is no castle in the woods, which are two fundamental components of what Evil Dead is”. It still needed to maintain some of the claustrophobia, and that translated really well from the cabin into an urban environment,” he continued.
“But the movie does include the book and an extraordinary amount of vicious, malevolent Deadites. Since this is about a family trapped in their flat in a large building, the rhythm is maintained but in a more modern setting.
Although it keeps to the reboot, it is still “firmly in the universe… there are many enjoyable call-backs, and there are direct ties to the past.” But creating something that could enhance the Evil Dead universe was a goal of this film’s creation
