It was three years ago when Sirisetti Sankeerth unfortunately lost his 800 race by a few seconds, which caused him to shatter his dreams of becoming a police officer and thought that his dream went up in smoke. But he didn’t expect what would happen next in his life. Now on Friday, Sankeerth will March shoulder to shoulder confidently along with 132 fellow IPS trainees at the dikshant parade of trainee IPS officers passing out from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National police academy located in Hyderabad. The 27 year old almost gave up on his dream of getting into police service and becoming a sub inspector after he failed to clear his mandatory 800 run to check fitness of candidates which happened 3 years ago.
Sankeerth, son of an electrician, Sankeerth, who belongs from Bellampalli village in Telangana’s Mancherial district, had cleared the state exam to become a policeman earlier. According to the reports of Times of India, Sankeerth told the news agency about the incident that happened three years ago. He said, “I was supposed to clear the mandatory 800 metres race in 160 seconds. But I failed in meeting the requirement by a whisker.”
He also shared the time when IPS Stephen Ravindra was posted in his village and Sankeerth’s father wanted him to become a police officer and wanted him to serve the people. “When IPS officer Stephen Ravindra was first posted in Bellampalli, my father had a close association with him. After watching him very closely, he wanted me to also become a police officer like him and serve the public,” Sankeerth said.
As Sankeerth finally realised that he needs to work hard on his fitness after the rejection, the young man gave his best and thus put his dreams on the backburner. He even took up a job as an assistant executive engineer in Mission Bhagiratha, which is a flagship water project of the government. In this way, he had a thought to help his father’s meagre earnings at Singareni Collieries.
“I used to go to the office by 7.30 am and prepare myself for UPSC. My actual work used to be in the evening. So, I used to manage time by preparing the whole day,” Sankeerth told Times of India.
So while he was concentrating and working on his fitness, Sankeerth also started taking the UPSC exams. But he felt it was difficult for him to clear the UPSC exams. However, he did not give up on his goal and dreams.
“It was in my fifth attempt, I cleared UPSC and during my training at SVP National Police Academy (SVPNPA) I also did well in sports and won a few medals too,” a happy Sankeerth, who ranked 330 in the latest UPSC exam, said to TOI. Sankeerth pursued civil engineering from Osmania University, and currently, he has been allotted the Telangana cadre. “It was my father’s dream to see me as an IPS officer,” he added. And now, Sankeerth along with his fellow IPS trainees will be sent to France as part of their training programme.
