The S-400 Triumf surface to air missile system delivery has been finally started by Russia to India. This information was given by the director of federal service for military-technical cooperation (FSMTC), Dmitry Shugaev.
Dmitry Shugaev told Sputnik ahead of the Dubai Airshow that the supplies of S-400 at different systems to India had been started. Shugaev said, “The supplies of the S-400 air defence system to India have started and are proceeding on schedule.”
This S-400 Triumf air defence missile system which is delivered by Russia is shortly helpful for India and will also give a major boost to India’s capabilities so that they can take out any fighter aircraft and cruise missiles which are at a long-range. The first unit of the S-400 system will be inducted by the Indian Air force (IAF) at a time when India is locked in a standoff with China in the Ladakh sector. China has already deployed two S-400 squadrons at Ngari Gar Gunsa and Nyingchi airbase in Tibet, and also across Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh respectively.
According to the news report which is provided by the news agency ANI, citing people familiar with the development that the air defence system has started reaching India and they provided the information that the air defence system will be first deployed at a location close to the western border of the country so that it can tackle threats from both parts of the borders shared with Pakistan and China.
The S-400 air defence system was contracted for by India in a deal that was worth around ₹35,000 crores. In addition to this, five squadrons would also be provided to India so that India will be able to tackle any air threats from the borders with Pakistan and China.
The news agency further reported citing the people that the air defence system is being transported to India by the ways of both sea routes and air routes. By the end of this year, the first squadron deliveries are expected to be completed. The air defence system would give India an edge as they would be able to take out enemy aircraft and cruise missiles from a distance of 400km. This air defence system indeed proves to be very helpful for India. As per the reports, the S-400 missile defence system is fully equipped with four different types of missiles, which can engage enemy aircraft, ballistic missiles, and also Airborne Warning And Control System (AWACS) planes at a distance of 400km, 250km, the medium-range 120km and the short-range 40km.
The officials told the news agency ANI that the Indian Air Force, whose officers and personnel have trained in Russia on the air defence system, from now on, will start to focus on the eastern borders. As per the reports obtained, they will also take the responsibility to provide the resources needed. It will be for the training of personnel. They are supposed to provide the training within the country itself. The training is all set to begin just after the first squadron is deployed, as per the officials who spoke to ANI.
In October 2018, India signed a $5.43 billion deal with Russia for five S-400 regiments. According to some reports, it is also known that officials have said that all deliveries are to be completed within five years.
