Emma Broyles, the new Miss America, is the first Korean-American woman to be crowned Miss America. Miss Alaska, Emma Broyles, was crowned Miss America 2022 at the 100th Miss America pageant, becoming the first Korean American and the first Alaskan to hold the title in the competition’s history. The event took place in front of a live audience at the Mohegan Sun Resort & Casino in Connecticut, after a long gap.
“Broyles took home the shinning crown after she impressed the judges with her final round answer, also called the “Miss America challenge.” She was asked how she would do in case a male representative of a Miss America sponsor made inappropriate comments towards her. Responding to the question, she said, “I know in my heart that as a woman, I am never going to let somebody treat me because women should never be treated like objects,” Broyles said.
“Women can be angry! We cannot be content with things that are happening,” Broyles said. The new Miss America received the crown as well as a $100,000 college scholarship after winning the competition. “I could not believe it,” Broyles said. “I am so, so grateful to everybody back at home who’s been supporting me for so long, and I’m so glad that I’m able to bring home the title of Miss America to the state of Alaska for the first time in history.” Broyles, 20, said her grandparents came to Anchorage from Korea around 50 years ago before her mother was born. The first Miss America contest was held in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in 1921. Broyles, on the other hand, is the 94th Miss America.
