Amazon Prime Video is continually releasing new movies on a near-daily basis, which is great for content but also makes it difficult to choose what to watch. Aren’t these first-world problems?
In fact, it’s estimated that the streaming site has around 24,000 films to choose from at any given time (via Business Insider). To get through that, you’d have to go on a binge, which we don’t encourage – believe me, I’ve tried. The good thing is that we’ve compiled a list of the best movies to watch in January 2022, so you’ll know what to watch straight away.
It’s worth mentioning that these options are based on Amazon Prime Video in the United Kingdom, and while the service is generally similar across territories, it’s not always identical. You may always use a VPN to see what entertainment options are accessible in different countries, or you can just buy the movie on Amazon. In any case, there are numerous possibilities for starting to watch the best movies available today.
THE TENDER BAR
George Clooney knocks it out of the park with his latest directional effort, a coming-of-age drama with Ben Affleck playing one of his most likable roles yet in Charlie Maguire. The Tender Bar is a film set in 1970s Long Island that follows nine-year-old JR (played by newcomer Daniel Ranieri, who is one to watch) as he deals with the consequences of his parent’s divorce and has no father figure to teach him life lessons – enter Uncle Charlie. Based on J. R. Moehringer’s memoir, we follow JR through his adolescent years (Tye Sheridan), college, and beyond, all while returning to his uncle’s bar for guidance. It’s a heartwarming film with outstanding performances from the main cast, as well as Lily Rabe and Christopher Lloyd in supporting roles.
THE FATHER
Anthony Hopkins’ acting skills are well-known. After all, the man has been performing in theatre and film for more than 60 years. Nothing, on the other hand, can prepare you for Florian Zeller’s masterclass in The Father. Dealing head-on with dementia, we are given a glimpse into the eyes of Anthony (same name), a man suffering from the disease but refusing to accept anything is wrong. It’s a heartbreaking film that sticks with you long after the credits have rolled. While Olivia Coleman as Anne, the patient daughter, is excellent, it is Hopkins who continues to prove his worth with this Oscar-winning performance. He did, after all, win Best Actor at the 93rd Academy Awards.

SING
Okay, we’ll end on a happier note with Sing, a musical animated comedy starring Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, Seth MacFarlane, and Taron Egerton, among others, in a world populated by anthropomorphic animals. The movie was a box office smash, and while it doesn’t bring anything new to the table in terms of its formula, it’s a fun watch for the whole family. It also has a few genuine laugh-out-loud moments. The sequel is about to hit UK theatres, so now is a great time to catch up before the weekend.
