Netflix’s next real crime documentary Bad Vegan: Fame. Fraud. Fugitives promise a fresh emotional rollercoaster, and we’ve just been given a brand new teaser.

While it is not a culinary film, it does focus on the scandal surrounding one of New York’s most prominent vegan restaurants, Pure Food, And Wine. Sarma Melngailis, dubbed the “queen of vegan food,” is the lady behind it all.

What is a bad vegan documentary about?

Netflix’s newest documentary series delves at the rise and fall of famous chef Sarma Melngailis, who was previously renowned as the “Queen of Vegan Cuisine” because of her Pure Food and Wine restaurant in New York. Her life took a turn for the worst after she became engaged with a man called Shane Fox on Twitter in 2011. Melngailis began emptying her restaurant’s assets and funneling them to Fox after he duped her into believing he could immortalize her dog and help her develop her culinary business.

A few years later, Fox and Melngailis are married and on the run after stealing over $2 million from the restaurant and its employees. They are finally apprehended in a Tennessee hotel. Fox, whose actual name is Anthony Strangis, orders a Domino’s pizza. And what after that? Is a mystery we do not wish to reveal.

The Teaser, The Trailer and The Controversy of the new Netflix Documentary

The new teaser gives a glimpse of the drama that will develop in Bad Vegan, and with interviews with ex-employees, it’s evident how much hype Melngailis generated with her restaurant. One former employee may be heard remarking, “It was ahead of its time.” Melngailis’s pictures and magazine frontals appear, supporting the notion that she was not only the face of the company but also of New York vegan gastronomy at the time.

There were several conspiracy theories as to why she married him. Was there any kind of blackmail going on?” Another ex-colleague inquires.

Anthony appears to have vowed to make Melngailis and her dog eternal. Yes, you are immortal. If it doesn’t make you scratch your head when viewing this trailer, perhaps the mention of a meat suit’ will. It’s New York’s craziest controversy, and we know each episode will bring surprises we’re not expecting. Melngailis is even referred to as the vegan Bernie Madoff, the American fraudster and banker who conducted the greatest Ponzi scheme in history, so we know there’s a lot to look forward to especially when the trailer concludes with Melngailis herself doing an interview.

The Synopsis of Melngilis, Celebrity Restauranteur

Melngailis, a raw food enthusiast, rose to fame as a celebrity restaurateur who catered to the likes of Owen Wilson, Bill Clinton, model Gisele Bündchen, and others. But everything changed when she became a wanted fugitive.

Chris Smith, the executive producer of Tiger King and the filmmaker of Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened, is the director of the new four-part documentary. It will look at how Melngailis went from being a celebrated pioneer of modern vegan food to being dubbed the “vegan fugitive.”

The Plot of Bad Vegan

The suggested storyline of the documentary “After meeting a man who was named Shane Fox (as she believed to be) on Twitter in 2011, Melngailis started to drain her restaurant’s funds and funneling the money to Fox after he dupes her into believing he could make her dreams  from expanding her food empire to making her beloved pitbull immortal, a reality, but only if she continues to obey his every request without question,”

“A few years later, the pair, now married and on the run after stealing over $2 million (£1.48 million) from the restaurant and its workers, is discovered holed up in a Tennessee hotel by law authorities,” it continues. What was their undoing? A Domino’s pizza bill made under Fox’s true name, Anthony Strangis.”

And if reading that made your brow wrinkle in bemusement, we can tell you that it’s all true. The couple was apprehended shortly after placing that fatal Domino’s order, but the documentary delves further into the love affair, power dynamics, and plain insanity at the heart of it all.
