Julia, a new HBO Max program starring British actress Sarah Lancashire, will be based on the life of Lia Child. The show provides a behind-the-scenes look at Child’s long-running television series, The French Chef, which pioneered the contemporary cooking show concept in America. According to HBO Max, Julia “explores a watershed moment in American history, including the creation of public television as a new social institution, feminism and the women’s movement, the nature of fame, and America’s cultural progress The series is, at its core, a portrayal of a loving marriage with a changing power dynamic.”

Julia Child is played by a British actress. This isn’t her first television appearance as a leading lady. She appeared in the British programs Coronation Street, Where the Heart Is, Clocking Off, and Seeing Red in the 1990s and early 2000s.
Her most highly lauded roles are Last Tango in Halifax (2012-2020), in which she portrays the protagonist’s daughter who discovers love late in life, and Happy Valley, a British crime thriller in which she plays a police sergeant in West Yorkshire.

On Tuesday, March 1, the streaming platform unveiled the first teaser for Julia, a program on Julia Child, triggering feelings of hunger and a strong yearning for a cup of French onion soup. The first trailer for “Julia,” a new series based on the life of famed culinary legend Julia Child, has been released by HBO Max.
“Julia,” created by Daniel Goldfarb (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), one must now follow Child (played in the series by Sarah Lancashire) in the years after the release of her renowned cookbook “Mastering the Art of French Cooking.” Child’s debut television series, “The French Chef,” premieres on the public television network WGBH. Child is opposed by the station’s sexist and elitist producers, but with the support of her friends and allies, she converts her television show into a confirmed sensation. “I hope you had as much pleasure as I did,” Lancashire says at the end of the clip, echoing Child’s final words from her presentation.
