India’s one of the best weightlifters Mirabai Chanu won a silver medal at Olympic 2021 and became the first Indian weightlifter to win the silver medal in Tokyo Olympics 2020. Mirabai Chanu also became the first Indian who won an Olympic silver medal in the women’s 49 kg category at Tokyo Olympics 2020.
India had waited 21 years to win a medal at the Olympics for weightlifting and surely Mirabai Chanu had ended this wait by winning a silver medal in the 49 kg category. Mirabai lifted 202 kg, that is she lifted 84 kg in her first attempt. Next, she lifted 87 kg in her next attempt. Later she increased the weight to 89 kg. Her personal best weight is 88 kg that she had lifted at the national championship last year, but she managed to carry 1 kg more.
But she was unable to lift it and cross her personal best. But yet she successfully lifted 87kg. The world champion Hoi Zhuihui from China won first place by lifting 94 kg after two attempts. Chanu and Delacruz were not able to lift 89 kg on the third attempt. Zhuhai gave her best and lifted 92kg at the first two attempts and lifted 94 kg on the third attempt.
But in the clean jerk, Chanu successfully lifted 110 kg in the first attempt and 115 kg in the next attempt but she was unable to raise 117 kg in the final attempt. Mirabai has the world record of lifting 119 kg in clean and jerk. Yet she won the silver medal and made India proud. As soon as the winners were announced Mirabai got emotional and hugged her coach. Later as she was really happy she broke into a dance and celebrated her win.
Surely, Mirabai Chanu has created a great history as she has become the first Indian weightlifter who won the silver medal at the Olympic games and lifted 202 kgs.
Mirabai also opened up after winning the medal. She said she tried her best to win a gold medal but she was not able to do it. She also added that when she did the second lift she came to know that she will definitely bring a medal along with her. But she has definitely made India proud by winning a medal in the Olympic games.
President Ramnath Kovind and also Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated her for her win and shared their happiness as she won. Sports minister Anurag Thakur and Kiren Rijiju also congratulated her for winning a medal and making India so proud. India’s Olympic gold medalist Abhinav Bindra (shooter), Olympic medallist wrestler Sakshi Malik, and lifter Satish Shivalingam (gold medallist at Commonwealth Games) congratulated her for her win. Many other cricketers such as Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, V.V.S Laxman, Gautam Gambhir also congratulated her for her success.
The 26-year-old made her step towards more success and as a result of her hard work and dedication, she has definitely made India proud and happy for her win.
