With assistance from his rich brother-in-law, Smith spent $1.5 million to construct Charlotte Motor Speedway in 1959. Smith declared bankruptcy two years later. A yearly event at the SMI track is the NASCAR All-Star Race. With the exception of 1986, when it was hosted at Atlanta Motor Speedway, it was staged at Charlotte Motor Speedway from 1985 through 2019. It was originally hosted at Bristol Motor Speedway in 2020, and it has since been conducted at Texas Motor Speedway.
