According to the latest data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, paediatric hospitalizations due to Covid-19 are at an all-time high since the outbreak began (CDC).
As per Xinhua news agency, the country is averaging 893 new hospital admissions per day for youngsters aged 17 and under, a record high since the CDC began tracking the number in August 2020.
According to the CDC, the majority of these hospitalizations are due to Covid-19, while other children were admitted for other reasons but tested positive for Covid-19 when they were admitted or during their hospital stay.
From August 1, 2020, to January 13, 2022, the country experienced over 90,000 total hospital admissions for children aged 17 and under, according to CDC data. Those aged infant to four years, who are not yet eligible for vaccination, have the highest hospitalisation rates of all children.
According to the CDC, the Omicron variant does not appear to cause more severe disease in children than other viral variants, and paediatric hospitalisation rates are still lower than any other adult age group.
The CDC predicted that the number of Covid-19 children admitted to hospitals will continue to rise in the coming weeks. To help guard against Covid-19, the CDC recommended that everyone aged 5 and up acquire a Covid-19 vaccine.
