Although Dune 2 has (somewhat) been delayed, we have excellent news for fans: filming has begun.
Even though we now have to wait until November 2023 (instead of October 2023) for Part Two, we do at least know that filming began on the sequel on July 18, 2022.
As production got near, the sequel continued to bolster its already impressive cast by casting more well-known actors in pivotal roles (more on those in a bit).
Because Denis Villeneuve chose to divide Frank Herbert’s book into two parts, Part One ended on a huge cliffhanger. The sequel, officially named Dune: Part Two, will return to Arrakis to finish the story.
Villeneuve set his sights on a potential trilogy by adapting Dune Messiah by Herbert for the third film. We anticipate it will depend on how well Part Two does at the ticket office, but never bet against Dune.
However, here is everything you need to know about Dune: Part Two before we go too far ahead of ourselves.
Dune 2 Release date
Originally scheduled for release on October 20, 2023, Dune: Part Two will now be available on November 17, 2023. The delay has not been explained.
The sequel is most likely to have an exclusive theatrical release in the US rather than a day-and-date streaming release, unlike the previous film, which was made available on HBO Max the same day it was released in US theatres.
As previously reported, the sequel will be shot in Budapest, Abu Dhabi, Jordan, and Italy starting on July 18, 2022.
We’d like to believe that we’ll all be returning to Arrakis in November 2023 as scheduled if there are no delays with the filming. Crossing fingers.
The cast of Dune 2
We received official confirmation of everyone returning for the sequel, the new faces we’ll be seeing, and the news that filming had begun.
As Paul Atreides, Timothée Chalamet is returning, and Zendaya’s Chani, who we knew would have a bigger role to play in Part Two after Paul finally met Chani at the end of the first movie, will be his co-lead in the sequel.
Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Javier Bardem as Stilgar, Stellan Skarsgard as the evil Baron Harkonnen, and Dave Bautista as the Baron’s nephew Glossu Rabban (also known as “The Beast”) are among the returning cast members.
Bardem will play a larger part in the sequel, similar to Zendaya, according to an interview he gave to Vanity Fair.
“He [Villeneuve] said, ‘I have a small role, if there is such a thing, as the second part of the book, the role will be bigger, and I would love you to do it if you want to.’ And I said, ‘Of course, I want to. I don’t care if there’s a second movie or not,” he recalled.
Other members:
However, given that they were all killed out in the previous film don’t expect to see Oscar Isaac as Duke Leto Atreides, Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho, or Babs Olusanmokun as Jamis.
However, book readers will be aware that Momoa may return as Duncan Idaho later in the novel, albeit presumably not in the follow-up.
After House Harkonnen’s raid on Arrakis, the fates of Josh Brolin’s Gurney Halleck and Stephen McKinley Henderson’s Thufir Hawat were unknown, but they have been confirmed they will both appear in Part Two.
There will also be a large number of new actors in the cast since it has already been announced that Austin Butler, an Elvis performer, will play Feyd-Rautha in Part Two, and Florence Pugh, a princess Irulan, Christopher Walken as Emperor Shaddam IV
The last person to join the cast was Souheila Yacoub, who will play the Fremen warrior Shishakli. However, now that production has begun, perhaps more surprises will be revealed.
The plot of Dune 2
The first movie finished when Paul and Lady Jessica were admitted into the Fremen and on their journey to Stilgar’s house, covering little over half of Herbert’s book.
The sequel will pit them against the Empire, with House Atreides essentially destroyed. As he leads a revolution against the Empire. So, we may expect to see more of Paul’s ideas of his future come to life.
Villeneuve admitted that he briefly considered ending the film later to match the book’s time shift but decided that his “initial inclination”. It is to conclude the film after Paul encounters the Fremen was the best choice.
Because of Paul’s gift for prophecy, the first movie had thrilling glimpses of what will happen in the character’s future. So, as he struggles with his ultimate destiny, which might be related to Chani and the Fremen of Arrakis.
As we highlighted in our assessment, this first half had to do the heavy lifting regarding world-building. For Villeneuve, laying the foundation for the first film was a “difficult assignment,” but now that it has been accomplished, Part Two is “an insane playground.”
Villeneuve hinted that certain details, such as the Feyd-Rautha mentioned above. So, might be “go a little bit deeper into some of these details” in the sequel. He remarked, “It’s like a game of chess.” “In the second half, some new characters will be introduced.”
Trailer
Although Dune: Part Two filming may have begun, it will still take some time before we see any footage. So, we don’t anticipate until the following year.
