Buckle up because things are about to get bumpy! Cars on the Road, a new series from the makers of the iconic Cars movies, follows the eponymous characters from the original 2006 film as they leave Radiator Springs and embark on a cross-country journey. Expect nothing but unpredictability, and the surprising story turns when Lightning McQueen and Mater take to the stretched-out roadways on their journey. And who knows, you might run into a few unfamiliar people (or cars or planes) along the way! Three highly regarded directors are leading this effort: Steve Purcell, Bobby Podesta, and Brian Fee. All three of them were part of earlier Cars initiatives. The executive producer of the award-winning Coco and other outstanding Pixar productions, Marc Sondheimer, is behind Cars on the Road. Jake Monaco, who also composed the music for Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!, is the series score composer.

The cast of Cars on the Road
In Cars 2, Lightning McQueen, a professional race vehicle in the Piston Cup, will make a comeback when he competes in the World Grand Prix. Before retiring after Cars 3, McQueen had a successful career. He then served as a mentor to the next generation of race cars. Larry, the Cable Guy, returns as Mater, a neighborhood tow vehicle with ties to Radiator Springs, and joins Wilson. In the first Cars movie, McQueen doesn’t initially like Mater, but sure enough, they are best friends.
Sally Carrera, the town attorney, and other well-known favorites like McQueen’s love interest (Bonnie Hunt). Cheech Marin makes a comeback as the hip lowrider Ramone, who never stays in one place for long.
Another figure to anticipate is Fillmore, the hippy Volkswagen, played by Lloyd Sherr. Quinta Brunson from ABC’s Abbott Elementary voices the monster truck Ivy in the episode, which also throws new cars into the mix.
The plot of Cars on the Road
A new television show called Cars on the Road follows Lightning McQueen and Mater as they go to the east to attend a wedding where Mater’s sister—whom no one knows—is the bride. Audiences may anticipate seeing anthropomorphic talking cars along the way—some kind, others dubious—in true Cars flair. The pair encounters odd road trip shenanigans as they travel to new places and interact with different people in the television series. You could even recognize a few people from earlier Cars films! Nine episodes of Cars on the Road will be available, all of which will be available on the show’s first release date.
On December 10, 2020, at Disney Investors Day, the plans for Cars on the Road were revealed. It was announced that an animated series centered on Lightning McQueen and Mater touring the nation would be made accessible for streaming in the fall of 2022. The project also revealed the show’s producers, writers, and directors on the same day. Some characters from the Cars spinoff films, Planes and Planes: Fire & Rescue, are rumored to feature in the series on June 2, 2021.
Trailer
On August 1, 2022, Pixar published the trailer for Cars on the Road. The trailer begins with Lightning McQueen, one of our favorite race cars, drifting around the arid landscapes outside the quaint town of Radiator Springs. Lightning McQueen and Mater, another friend from the tow truck, are shown driving side by side as McQueen challenges Mater to a race. In all his cheekiness, Mater declines the challenge only to begin accelerating and gaining a lead. Flo’s V8 Cafe is soon filled with our beloved Radiator Springs locals. Mater (surprise, surprise) says he won’t be in town for a while because he has to attend his sister’s wedding.
McQueen advises him to go along. We watch montages of the pair traveling and stopping briefly at various landmarks, like the World’s Largest Lugnut and a real dinosaur fashioned out of auto parts. Cars on the Road is an exciting voyage through the most outlandish locations filled with humorously spontaneous moments where the characters make new friends (and potentially foes) along the way. However, putting the places aside, this classic road trip focuses on the bond between McQueen and Mater, which gives this series its fun and liveliness.
