So far, Netflix and 2022 have provided us with some fantastic television, and we’re only getting started.
Netflix’s next star-studded series, Anatomy of a Scandal, is slated to premiere shortly, and we believe it will be another hit. Because it is situated in Westminster and investigates the skeletons of a UK MP and the effect of power and privilege, the program will deliver us all the gritty British political drama we could dream of.
During those dark days of lockdown, looking for a thriller from the team who brought us the acclaimed Manhattan crime drama The Undoing? You’re pretty fortunate. Anatomy of a Scandal, an immaculately cast, elegantly crafted, and highly binge-able Netflix series, is headed for our living rooms.
The series is based on a 2018 psychological thriller written by a political reporter and stars Rupert Friend and Sienna Miller as a happily married couple ascending the greased pole of high political office – him as a government minister, her as his faithful and supporting wife.
The book is based on “Anatomy of a Scandal.”
The series is based on a psychological thriller written by Sarah Vaughan, a former Guardian political journalist. It was released in 2018, a foreshadowing of the #MeToo tsunami that would erupt a year later with the Harvey Weinstein case. Vaughan recalls, “I’d seen how a few politicians might approach the truth flexibly, or at least how one had when it came to his having an affair.” ‘Before becoming a lobby journalist, I covered a number of high-profile trials and was fascinated by the drama of a courtroom.’ All of these factors and my time studying English at Oxford in the 1990s influenced the dream and novel.
The series, such as the book, is full of sharply identified specifics of Westminster life – special interest space tussling, Westminster beautiful dining polite disapproval, the press pack bloodhounding after a story – and is heavy with the unique gravity of life in politics, where it can take decades to rise but only moments to fall. The novel was written during David Cameron’s tenure as prime minister. A Bullingdon-style club appears significantly in a flashback in the plot, providing connecting tissue for the current Prime Minister. Is it going to be on Boris’s watch list?
The storyline and the plot of the series “Anatomy of a Scandal.”
When James Whitehouse admits to Sophie that he has been having an affair with a young intern at his office, Olivia Lytton, things quickly go south for the pair (Naomi Scott). He vows to her that it’s all over and doesn’t mean anything. The attractive but slick Whitehouse appears to have landed on his feet again. The PM standing by his old uni buddy, and his wife split between her sense of betrayal and her determination to protect her family. However, when Lytton accuses the MP of rapping her in a Parliamentary elevator, the issue becomes a new horror and evil level.
Anatomy of a Scandal is primarily a courtroom drama that examines the idea of consent in the context of a relationship and how toxic male entitlement and male sexual assault may create hazardous environments for women. ‘[Anatomy of a Scandal is] an intelligent and intriguing series about a sexual consent scandal among the British affluent elite and the women caught up in its wake,’ according to the show’s logline.
‘The program explores entitlement, honesty, and the bounds of consent,’ say showrunners David E Kelley and Melissa James Gibson, based on Sarah’s gripping novel. As the Whitehouses’ life is flipped upside down, think House of Cards meets The Riot Club, with stylized sound design and many Dutch tilts.

What other actors appear in “Anatomy of a Scandal”?
Naomi Scott, who featured opposite Kristen Stewart in 2019’s Charlie’s Angels, will be joining Rupert Friend and Sienna Miller on the red carpet. She portrays a young researcher who has an affair with Whitehouse and is accused of rape by Michelle Dockery, who plays Kate Woodcroft, QC, on Downton Abbey. Josette Simon (Broadchurch) plays Whitehouse’s defense lawyer Angela Regan.
What location did “Anatomy of a Scandal” take place?
The story jumps between current Westminister and Oxford University in the 1990s, when the Libertines, an elite bunch of wealthy wastrels, come together to snort lines and perform something called ‘anal chugging’ (we haven’t heard of it) and plot to take over the country. A young James Whitehouse (Ben Radcliffe) is one of them, a toff who meets his true love, Sophie, at Oxford. The series was shot at Oxford, including several of the university’s colleges, so expect to see the dreaming spires heavily featured.
Can we expect a sequel for the “Anatomy of a scandal”?
However, not in the traditional sense, Netflix and Kelley aim for Anatomy of a Controversy to be the first in a series of anthologies in which each season will focus on a new scandal. To put it another way, expect more darkly tinged tales of power and luxury in the future.
