After India got huge disappointment by seeing all the failures to reach the medal, and by just seeing only one silver medal win, Lovlina Borgohain, our Indian boxer, gave hope for another medal. So there are chances that now India may win another medal.
Today the Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain competed against German welterweight Nadine Apetz, who is 12 years her senior. Nadine is the first German woman who qualified for a boxing event at the Olympics. She is known for her two-time World Championship bronze medals and also she is a former European champion. On the other hand, Lovlina is also a two-time World Championship bronze medalist. The two-time World championship bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain had an impressive fight against the German boxer Nadine Apetz. Borgohain took the first round with a 3-2 verdict. Rather than attacking the opponent, Lovlina preferred to play the safe side and then come up with a punch. Although the German fought well she was not able to play as per her plans against Lovlina now who knew more tactics than her. Even though lovlina was dominant in the first two rounds by identical 3-2 margins she continued to throw even more punches on her opponent and Nadine too tried her best to catch up with lovlina but was not able to do so.
Her tactics were one of the great plus points to win this round and go to the quarterfinals. She was going for the attack but Lovlina was realizing that she was getting hit but then the coach also helped her and told her to play on the counter and keep herself guard up. She relied more on counterattacks to get more points. She started very slowly but then she grew into the contest. While Nadine also tried her best to win the first round. Although the judges thought that Lovlina’s performance was better than Nadine’s in the first round. Lovlina became more dominant in the second round and threw some counter punches to her opponent. And at the third round where Lovlina’s tactics were the best, she first frustrated her opponent, and her opponent too pressurized herself to win the round. But Lovlina’s smart mind helped her to go to the quarterfinals.
After Mary Kom, Lovlina became the second Indian boxer to win, to go to the quarter-final in the Tokyo Olympics.
Now she will have to compete against Chinese Taipei’s Nien Chin Chen in the quarter-finals on Friday. Lovlina has already competed with Nien Chin in the 2018 World championships semi-finals where she got defeated. It is surely a tough competition now. Nien Chin Chen is now a barrier between Lovlina and her goal to win the medal for India.
India has faced much loss in Tokyo Olympics 2020. But, Lovlina surely brought hope to India after the day was becoming kind of disappointing at the Olympics.
