One of the most famous boxers, MC Mary Kom, who has been an Olympic medalist will not be a part of the World championship now. As per the reports she came to the decision that she will skip the World Championship and the Asian Games which will be conducted this year. For the reason behind this decision, she stated that she wanted to give all the newcomers as well as the youngsters more exposure and opportunities.
Mary Kom will not be a part of the World championships?
 Mary Kom has won the World Championship 6 times now. Well, currently she is focusing on her preparations for the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. As per the reports, the schedule of the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships should begin from May 6 to 21 in Istanbul, Turkey. Also according to the sources, the 2022 Commonwealth Games and 2022 Asian Games will begin on July 28 and September 10 respectively.
While speaking to the Boxing Federation of India (BFI), MC Mary Kom stated, “I would like to withdraw to give opportunities to the younger generation to make a name for themselves on the international stage and get exposure and experience of major tournaments. I would like to focus on the preparation for the Commonwealth Games only.” Also, the schedule states that from Monday. The selection trials will start soon. It is for all twelve categories of the world championships and is coming to an end on Wednesday.
The trials will also consist of Asian games Weights divisions that are the same as IBA. Now for the two Asian games weight categories that are 51 kg and 69 kg the trials are held later. At a beginning from a mass 11 and will come to an end on March 14. Thus the boxers of the closest weight categories will get more time to also take a shot. It is at the trials for the Asian Games.
The BFI statement:
“Mary Kom has been the torchbearer for Indian boxing for the last two decades and has inspired countless boxers and sportspersons across the world. We completely respect her decision and it is a testimony of her champion character to make way for the other boxers,” BFI president Ajay Singh stated after getting the decision by Mary Kom. “We are delighted that we have such a good bench strength and are looking forward to the younger generation to make the nation proud and I hope and wish Mary all the best with her preparations for the CWG,” he further added.Â
The participants who are eligible for the selection trials also include the national campers. Also are the participants of the Tokyo Olympics. Well, people who did not even compete in the national championships can actually take a part in this one. The BFI president or his nominee along with an expert panel of reputed boxers. They will be sitting on the selection committee. Consisting of all of them will ensure a smooth schedule. It is for the trials to be conducted and the bouts will be video recorded. The Asian Games selection trials for men will begin on money. Talking about the Commonwealth games, the trials for both men and women are to happen from June.
