Patti Ann LuPone was hired as a replacement for Genevieve, the title part in the problematic pre-Broadway production of The Baker’s Wife, by theatrical producer David Merrick in 1976. The show toured extensively, but Merrick thought it was unfit for Broadway and forced it to close. 

Patti Ann LuPone has worked with David Mamet on several occasions since 1977, performing in his plays The Woods, All Men Are Whores, The Blue Hour, The Water Engine (1978), Edmond, and The Old Neighborhood (1997). In The Old Neighborhood, a New York Times reviewer said of LuPone, “The naturalistic fire that Ms. LuPone unleashes here will astound those who only know her as a musical comedy star. Ms. LuPone finds contradictory layers of past and present selves in virtually every line as Jolly, a part inspired by Mr. Mamet’s real-life sister and his developed female character. She appears as a loving matriarch and a wounded adolescent, emotional as well as devastatingly clear-eyed.” Patti Ann LuPone had a brief role in the Broadway musical adaption of Studs Terkel’s Working in 1978.
