John Michael Osbourne was born in Birmingham, England, on December 3, 1948. He has two younger brothers and three older sisters. Since elementary school, he has been known as “Ozzy.” He attributes his desire to pursue a career as a musician to the Beatles and their song “She Loves You” (1963). Also, in August 1969, they changed their band name to Black Sabbath, inspired by the film of the same name. They began to play intense blues music with darker and gloomier lyrics. In November 1969, Black Sabbath signed with Philips Records and issued their first single, “Evil Woman,” in January 1970, followed by their debut self-titled album the following month.

Even though their first album received mixed reviews and Warner Bros. Records in the United States only put a small amount of money into the band, their debut was a great commercial success. Their subsequent albums, Paranoid (1970), Master of Reality (1971), and Volume 4 (1972), all got mixed reviews from critics but were commercial smash hits. Master of Reality was certified gold less than two months after its publication, while Volume 4 was gold within a month of its release. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, released in 1973, was their first album to earn positive press and was their fifth consecutive platinum album in the United States.

Sabotage (1975), Technical Ecstasy (1976), and Never Say Die! were among the other albums Osbourne worked on with the band. Osbourne was sacked from the band by his bandmates in April 1979. Osbourne also served as a judge at the 6th, 10th, and 11th annual Independent Music Awards, which encourage independent musicians’ careers. So, at a ceremony held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London in May 2015, Osbourne received the Ivor Novello Award for Lifetime Achievement from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors.
