“People have tried to write this story before. He kills it every time.” This adage was accurate for individuals who ventured to look into allegations of sexual harassment against prominent film producer Harvey Weinstein. However, The New York Times published a groundbreaking piece on October 5, 2017, that uncovered Weinstein’s decades-long strategy to settle with the women he had assaulted. The New York Times’ coverage of this topic earned them the Pulitzer Prize gold medal for public service in 2018. Without the two female reporters who led the investigation, Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey, this article would not have been possible. Almost five years later, Universal Pictures’ She Said is bringing the amazing tale of the exposé to cinemas.
The planned American drama is directed by German filmmaker Maria Schrader, who won a Primetime Emmy Award in 2020 for her Netflix film Unorthodox. She Said covers Kantor and Twohey’s personal and professional lives as they work on the Weinstein probe from the beginning to the end. The movie focuses on these two women who try to convince Weinstein’s victims to speak up despite getting terrible threats if they decide to expose the tale.
