About her personal life
Hsiu-Hui Tseng and Chih-Hsiu Chen gave birth to Chen on August 16, 1999 in Fremont, California. Her parents were born in Taiwan and immigrated to the United States. Jeffrey, her younger brother, is also an ice dancer for Team USA. Throughout high school, she was home-schooled through Connections Academy. Chen stated that she wants to pursue a career in medicine.
She was accepted into Cornell University’s School of Human Ecology’s class of 2023, where she pursued a pre-medical major in Human Biology, Health, and Society. Chen had no intention of taking any gap years or deferring her study while training for the 2022 Winter Olympics, but after the COVID-19 pandemic broke out, she decided to take a two-year leave of absence.
Kristi Yamaguchi, the 1992 Olympic Champion, is Chen’s mentor and lives in the same area as her. Chen stated that she had spondylolisthesis in her memoir Finding the Edge: My Life on the Ice, which she published in November 2017. Chen is a fan of the Japanese figure Totoro and enjoys drawing. She was picked as one of eight POWERGIRLs to serve as brand ambassadors for social fitness blogger Cassey Ho’s sportswear firm, POPFLEX Active, on International Women’s Day 2019.
