On Thursday, the very famous Indian cricketer and India’s T20 captain, Virat Kohli, officially announced that he will no longer be India’s T20 captain after the T20 world cup. However, the cherished cricketer revealed that he will continue to lead the side in ODIs and Test cricket matches and be a part of the team, doing his best as a batsman. As per that statement that Viral Kohli tweeted on his official Twitter account’s page he stated “I’ve decided to step down as the T20 captain after this T20 World Cup in Dubai in October.” From the past few days, there have been many rumors and speculations made regarding Virat Kohli’s future as a white ball captain. Especially talking about the backdrop of Rohit Sharma’s brilliant track record of winning five IPL titles for Mumbai Indians, the speculations were getting viral rapidly like a fire.
Virat Kohli has also added a statement on his official Twitter page and said “Understanding workload is a very important thing and considering my immense workload over the last 8-9 years playing all three formats and captaining regularly for last five to six years, I feel I need to give myself space to be fully ready to lead the Indian team in Test and ODI cricket.” He further added, “I have given my everything to the Team during my time as T20 captain and I will continue to do so for the T20 team as a batsman moving forward.” Well this decision was not taken by Virat Kohli himself and it was taken after consulting the head coach Ravi Shastri, his heir apparent Rohit, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly, and secretary Jay Shah. All the social media users including Virat Kohli’s fans were a bit upset by this decision but it’s not that Virat Kohli is getting completely retired from the cricket team.
He took over the limited-overs reins from Dhoni in January 2017. Later he led India to the T20I series and won against every major cricket-playing nation. But Kohli’s failure to win an ICC event has put a lot of pressure on the upcoming T20 World Cup. His stepping down from Captain’s post will decrease the pressure on him. He will be a part of all the matches and we will still get to see his skills on the ground. Well, fans will still get to see him lead the team and at the same time, the beloved batsman will be continuing to be a part of the team and do his best in all the upcoming matches for which the fans have been waiting impatiently. Also, all the cricket lovers have been eagerly waiting for the T20 world cup which will be starting soon on October 17, 2021.
