Mick Jones Early Life

He lived with his maternal grandmother Stella Class for a significant portion of his early years in South London. Grant Shapps, a Conservative and Welwyn Hatfield’s representative, is Jones’ cousin. Because “[he] thought that’s how you get into bands and stuff,” With his glam rock band, the Delinquents, he first acquired popularity as a guitarist in the early 1970s. Soon after, he met Tony James, with whom he eventually co-founded the protopunk London SS. By 1976, that group had disbanded, and Jones, Paul Simonon, and Keith Levene were looking for a new path.

Mick Jones’s Career

When he was 21, Bernie Rhodes in a Shepherd’s Bush squat introduced him and Paul Simonon to Joe Strummer. The band started while practicing in a derelict railroad warehouse in Camden Town. Since the beginning of the band, until Strummer and Simonon sacked him in 1983, Jones has played lead guitar, sang, and co-written songs. He penned the song “Train in Vain” about his relationship with Slits guitarist Viv Albertine. Jones was fired from the band in large part due to his tardiness. In Danny Garcia’s 2012 documentary, Jones consented to give a rare interview about the Clash’s breakup and the circumstances surrounding his departure from “his band.”

In 2003, Jones and the rest of the Clash were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for their work together.

Jones talked about the band rejoining before Strummer’s passing while promoting the band’s 2013 box set, Sound System, which he claims will be his final effort on Clash music.

Other works:

There were a few moments at the time I was up for it (Hall of Fame reunion in 2003), and Joe was up for it. Paul wasn’t. And neither, probably, was Topper Headon, who didn’t wind up even coming in the end. It didn’t look like a performance was going to happen anyway. I mean, you usually play at that ceremony when you get in. Joe had passed by that point, so we didn’t. We were never in agreement. It was never at a point where all of us wanted to do it simultaneously. Most importantly, we became friends again after the group broke up and continued that way for the rest of the time. That was more important to us than the band.

Jones stated that Strummer had plans for a Clash reunion in an interview with BBC 6Music in October 2013 and that new songs were being composed for a potential album. He and Strummer started composing new songs for what Strummer believed would be the upcoming Mescaleros album in the months before Strummer passed away. Jones stated, “We used to write in batches, much like gumbo, rather than just one at a time. He was supposed to accompany the Mescaleros to the recording studio during the day and then send them all home. I would stay up all night to work with you.” Jones claimed that after their collaborative work, months had elapsed before he ran.

Producing role:

Jones has also, on occasion, worked as a producer. He worked on Ellen Foley’s second studio album, Spirit of St. Louis, in 1981. Jones co-wrote tracks for the album with Tymon Dogg and Joe Strummer while also dating Foley. Members of the Blockheads, Tymon Dogg, and all four Clash members contributed to the record as musicians.

Jones and Mick Ronson collaborated on the production of Ian Hunter’s Short Back ‘n’ Sides LP in 1981. He contributed vocals and guitar to several of the tracks on the album. He also worked on Theatre of Hate’s debut record, Westworld, composed by Kirk Brandon and released in 1982. On the song’s lead single, “Do You Believe in the Westworld,” Jones also played guitar.
