Robert Lewandowski breaks Gerd Muller’s record

Robert Lewandowski break Gerd Muller’s 49-year record of most goals scored in a calendar year by scoring his 43rd Bundesliga goal of 2021. With just three minutes remaining in Bayern’s final Bundesliga match of the season, the Polish forward scored the fourth goal in a 4-0 win over Wolfsburg on Friday, eclipsing Muller.
Muller, a legendary German striker who is largely regarded as one of the best finishers in the game, has held a record of 42 goals since 1972. Muller died in August at the age of 75, and the club mourned his passing. In 607 competitive appearances for Bayern Munich, the great scored 566 goals.
Lewandowski was widely regarded as the favorite for the annual Ballon d’Or award, but he was defeated by Lionel Messi of Paris Saint-Germain in November.

It was also an evening to remember for Bayern Munich’s Thomas Muller, who scored the game’s first goal against Wolfsburg, celebrated his 400th Bundesliga appearance.
Dayot Upamecano and Leroy Sane scored two goals in two minutes in the second half to end the game as a contest before Lewandowski added the icing late on.
Bayern now leads Borussia Dortmund by nine points at the top of the table, with the team headed into the Christmas break until January 7.
