Wilson appeared in nine games and earned seven starts as a true freshman at BYU in 2018. He started his first career game against Hawaii, becoming BYU’s youngest quarterback to do so. Zach concluded the season with 120 completions on 182 attempts for 1,578 yards, 12 touchdowns, and three interceptions. He was named the 2018 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl MVP after completing all 18 of his passes for 317 yards and four touchdowns in Western Michigan’s 49-18 triumph.

Wilson started 12 games and completed 247 of 336 passes for 3,692 yards, 33 touchdowns, and three interceptions while rushing for 255 yards and ten touchdowns, shattering Steve Young’s school season completion percentage 73.5 per cent. He was awarded the 2020 Boca Raton Bowl offensive MVP after completing 26 34 passes for 425 yards and three touchdowns in a 49-23 victory over UCF. He and USC safety Talanoa Hufanga were named the Polynesian College Football Player of the Year for 2020.

Wilson made his debut against the Carolina Panthers, competing against his Jets predecessor Sam Darnold. He finished with 258 passing yards, two touchdowns, and a rushing 2-point conversion after throwing an interception in the first half, but the Jets fell 14-19. Wilson threw four interceptions in the Jets’ Week 2 home opener against the New England Patriots, including on his first two throw attempts. The Jets went on to lose 6-25.

Wilson scored his first professional win over the Tennessee Titans in Week 4 after a 0-26 shutout defeat to the Denver Broncos in which he threw for 160 yards and two interceptions. Wilson threw one interception and two touchdown passes and completed 21 34 attempts for 297 yards. The Jets went on to win 27-24 in overtime after taking a 24-17 lead in the fourth quarter. Wilson threw his ninth interception against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 5, becoming the fourth NFL quarterback (after DeShone Kizer, Zach Mettenberger, and Blake Bortles) to be intercepted in each of his first five starts.

Wilson suffered a knee injury in the second quarter of Week 7’s game against the Patriots after being hit by linebacker Matthew Judon. He was ruled out for the rest of the game, and Mike White took his place in the 13-54 loss. Following the loss, Wilson was diagnosed with a sprained posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, causing him to miss four games. Wilson returned in Week 12 and defeated the Houston Texans on the road for the first time. During the game, he also scored his first running touchdown. Wilson has four straight losses before winning his season’s final match against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He did, however, improve his turnover differential by not throwing an interception in the game.
