He played a right hand and a variety of minor characters, including Phoebe, and is Kevin Clash’s Elmo’s understudy. For the second season of Play with Me Sesame, he played Ernie, and for Sesame Street 4D, he played Oscar the Grouch. At the age of 18, he became a full-time member of Sesame Street.

On November 21, 2006, Tartaglia joined the cast of Beauty and the Beast as Lumière, a role he held until early June 2007 . He created, executive produced, and starred in his own Playhouse Disney television series, Johnny and the Sprites. The show began as a 5-minute interstitial series, but on January 13, 2007, it became a full 30-minute series.


In Shrek The Musical, he played Pinocchio, Puss in Boots, and the Magic Mirror, as well as puppeteering the dragon. The show premiered on Broadway on December 14, 2008, at The Broadway Theatre, following a try-out in Seattle.


Tartaglia stayed on the show until August 16, 2009, when Robb Sapp took his position. He returned on December 14, 2009, and stayed until January 3, 2010, when the production ended.
John Tartaglia’s ImaginOcean was performed Off-Broadway at New World Stages from March 31, 2010 to September 4, 2011.

William Wade composed the music and lyrics for the play, which features puppets conceived and produced by The Puppet Kitchen and set design by Robert Kovach. ImaginOcean is a puppet show about fish that is aimed at children aged 2 to 8. The puppets illuminate in the dark, while the actors are dressed in black, giving the impression that they are floating.
