Clunes made his television debut in the BBC sitcom No Place Like Home as one of the sons and then appeared in two series of the sitcom All at No 20. In 1993, he featured as Group Captain Barker in the two-part TV mini-series Over Here and as Dick Dobson in Demob, a film about two demobilized soldiers who must adjust to civilian life after entertaining Second World War troops with a raunchy cabaret act.


He has been a regular participant or guest presenter on the BBC One panel show Have I Got News for You since 1994. In 1998, he appeared in Sweet Revenge and in the film Shakespeare in Love as Richard Burbage. He’s also made a number of appearances on the radio, including a guest appearance on BBC Radio 4’s Baldi.

He is the voice of Kipper in the animated children’s series Kipper the Dog and is a standard voice-over artist. Clunes also did voice acting for Safeway commercials from 1993 to 1999, including the role of Harry in the ‘When Harry Met Molly’ advertising campaign.

He played Jessica White’s father in a television adaptation of Fungus the Bogeyman. He appeared on BBC One television in the title character of Reggie Perrin in The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin in 2009 and 2010. Clunes portrayed Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in the ITV mini-series, Arthur & George, in 2015. In 2018, he starred in the ITV program Manhunt as DCI Colin Sutton (first screened in 2019).
