A live-action version of the 1940 cartoon film with the same name, Pinocchio, is about to be released. The movie will debut exclusively on Disney+ on September 8, 2022, as it was announced on April 8, 2015.
This live-action adaptation of the well-known story of a wooden puppet who sets out on an exciting quest to become a real kid is directed by Academy Award® winner Robert Zemeckis. Pinocchio’s “conscience” and guide are played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Cynthia Erivo, respectively. The cast also includes Lewin Lloyd as Lampwick, Giuseppe Battiston as Seor Stromboli, and Kyanne Lamaya as Fabiana (and her marionette Sabina).
Development of The movie Pinocchio.
According to reports, Sam Mendes was selected to helm the picture in May 2017, and Chris Weitz wrote the screenplay. However, Paul King was officially announced as the director in February 2018, and Weitz’s script was slated to be revised by Jack Thorne in Pinocchio.
Weitz indicated that the screenplay was still being worked on August 21, 2018, and that it was anticipated that production will start in Italy and England in 2019.
Tom Hanks had begun preliminary negotiations to portray Geppetto in November 2018. It was revealed in January 2019 that Paul King has left his position as director for personal reasons.
It was revealed in October 2019 that Chris Weitz had co-written a new script with Simon Farnaby and King and that Robert Zemeckis was in discussions on Pinocchio to take over as the film’s director. Along with Andrew Milano, Chris Weitz will produce the movie. Tom Hanks reportedly declined the part of Geppeto as well. 2018-11-29 Zemeckis formally accepted the position of director. Disney said in August 2020 that Hanks was once more being considered for the Geppetto role.
It was confirmed that the movie would debut only on Disney+ on December 10, 2020. It was revealed that Luke Evans had been chosen to play The Coachman on January 26, 2021.
Alterations from the 1940 movie in Pinocchio
Sofia the Seagull is a new character in the adaptation in Pinocchio. In the original film, Geppetto in Pinocchio had spectacles; but, in the remake, he only wears them when working and not at other times.
While the “naughty young lads” in Pinocchio sent to Pleasure Island were all, in fact, males, there are also tiny girls among them in the live-action adaptation.
The Blue Fairy in Pinocchio is portrayed in the original film as being of Caucasian descent, precisely as in the Italian novel that the movie is based on, however, she is of African-American heritage in the live-action remake.
Following Geppetto, this will be Disney’s second Pinocchio live-action movie.
Robert Zemeckis in Pinocchio has now worked with Disney four times; his first project was Who Framed Roger Rabbit, his second was A Christmas Carol, and his third was Mars Needs Moms.
Since 2011’s Mars Needs Moms, Robert Zemeckis hasn’t officially collaborated with Disney again.
Tom Hanks and Robert Zemeckis have collaborated on four occasions; the first was with Forrest Gump, the second with Cast Away, and the third with The Polar Express.
Luke Evans will portray a Disney movie character for the second time; he previously played Gaston in the live-action Beauty and the Beast movie in 2017.
Additionally in Pinocchio, Luke Evans will portray a traditional Disney villain for the second time in this film.
Following his performance as Kamari in the 2019 Lion King remake, Keegan-Michael Key will play this character in another Disney remake.
After Toy Story 4, in Pinocchio this will be Tom Hanks and Keegan-Michael Key’s second Disney movie together.
Donald Duck, Zazu and Rafiki from The Lion King, Aurora from Sleeping Beauty, Snow White from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and Roger and Jessica Rabbit are all shown on a few of the clocks at Geppetto’s workshop.
The images of Pinocchio and Jiminy Cricket in this movie are similar to those of their animated equivalents from the year 1940.
Contrary to the original animated picture, which was rated G, this is the only Pinocchio movie to get a PG rating by the MPA.
