Netflix is making a significant investment in the video game industry, and in addition to creating original games, the streamer is also creating several adaptations of well-known games from other publishers, such as 2K Games, Ubisoft, and others.
Another significant undertaking is Horizon, a live-action adaptation of the Horizon video game series that follows Aloy on her journey across a post-apocalyptic United States that is primarily populated by mechanical creatures. Horizon is a Sony production. At this time, there are no cast members or directors confirmed, but Carter Swan and Asad Qizilbash are.
Both are highly well-known individuals when it comes to live-action remakes of PlayStation games, having already worked on Uncharted and the future remakes of The Last of Us, Ghost of Tsushima, and Twisted Metal.
Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions are the companies behind the Netflix series, which was first announced in May 2022. The Dutch video game developer Guerrilla Games, most renowned for their work on the Killzone series, also produces the Horizon series. The remaining information on Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Horizon is as follows.
What’s the storyline in Horizon?
The original Horizon Zero Dawn game’s narrative is set in a post-apocalyptic version of the United States in the third millennium. A variety of technologically advanced, dispersed tribes make up the human population. The “Old Ones” are referred to as their highly sophisticated forebears.
Machines are enormous robotic beings that rule Earth. They live in harmony with people for the most part, yet occasionally they are hunted for their parts. Aloy, who was raised in isolation from the four tribes and without parents, is the protagonist of the main game.
As she gets older, she is forced to look into a phenomenon known as the “Derangement,” which has led to machines becoming more hostile toward people and the appearance of larger and deadlier robots.
A summary of the Nora, Banuk, Carja, and Oseram tribes is given below:
The Nora are fearsome hunter-gatherers who call nature the “All-Mother” and live in the highlands. The Carja are city-building desert dwellers who worship the Sun. The Banuk is made up of nomadic clans of hunters and shamans who adore the machines and their “sounds” and live in icy mountains. The Oseram are scavengers and tinkerers renowned for their metallurgy, brewing, and fighting prowess.
Will the Netflix adaptation accurately depict the first game’s original plot?
It’s difficult to say for sure, but given the track record of video game adaptations, we definitely shouldn’t anticipate Horizon to be an exact recreation of the game’s plot. Particularly in light of the newest Resident Evil live-action series on Netflix, which has little to do with the stories of any of the games.
As of June 2022, no cast for the Netflix Horizon series has been revealed. For those who don’t know, Ashly Burch performs the game’s Aloy voice. Characters in the game were also voiced by notable actors Lance Reddick, John MacMillan, and John Hopkins.
As the Horizon announcement nearly coincided with the release of Stranger Things Season 4, which was further amplified by Sink’s Max having a particularly memorable and exciting scene that the internet also loved, Sadie Sink has recently become one of the most popular fan choices online for the role of Aloy.
Lyndon Smith is frequently mentioned for the role in online circles. Aloy’s face model, a Dutch model, and actress Hannah Hoekstra have also been mentioned as potential candidates.
However, it is highly unlikely that Netflix would choose to cast Aloy’s face model because it would be too similar to the game and adaptations typically avoid doing that.
How is Horizon being produced?
According to the Canadian Director’s Guild, shooting will start in late August 2022 for the Horizon 2074 title. According to them, production and post-production would be finished by the end of March 2023.
In addition, they list the following as art:
• Mark Steel.
• Michael Brady
• Kathleen V. Chavez
• Give Corless
• Cathleen Liddell
• Rosario Mackintosh
• Cherri Wan
• The Natalie Yeung
• Anastasie Tkachuk
• The Adrienne Turner
• Elham Morshedi.
When will Horizon be available on Netflix?
Netflix hasn’t announced a release date for its live-action Horizon adaptation, but given that production on the project is scheduled to begin in 2022, we can assume anticipate seeing the first season on the streaming service sometime in early 2024.
