Every Tom Hanks film is a unique experience with its emotional intensity, especially his slice-of-life dramas. A Man Called Otto is one of the Forrest Gump actor’s most eagerly anticipated future movies since it’s been a long since we’ve seen him in a satisfying, moving plot. The protagonist of A Man Called Otto, a cranky 60-year-old widower, named Otto, gets by in his retired life by alienating people and passing judgement on his neighbours, their pets, their kids, and everyone else he meets.

However, his viewpoint is questioned when a vibrant family arrives in the area and completely upends his way of life. The comedy-drama movie is based on Swedish author Fredrik Backman’s 2012 book A Man Called Ove. Hannes Holm, who also wrote the screenplay for the Swedish film of the same name, adapted the original tale. The second movie version of the book, A Man Called Otto, is helmed by Marc Forster and written by David Magee. Renee Wolfe and other executive producers are also involved in the production.

The plot seems ideal for the joyous and festive season despite not being a Christmas movie and not having a widespread holiday release. Consequently, even if you miss it during its brief December run, you can always catch the start of the New Year with this family film. Check out our comprehensive guide to A Man Called Otto, which includes the storyline, trailer, release date, cast and crew information, and everything else we currently know.

The cast of A Man Called Otto

Awarded an Academy Award, A Man Called Otto stars Tom Hanks as the title character, a widowed, 60-year-old retired man whose only goal in life appears to be tormenting everybody who gets in his way. Mariana Trevino plays Marisol, Otto’s new neighbour, along with Rachel Keller, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Cameron Britton, Kailey Hyman, Mike Birbiglia, Elle Chapman, Kelly Lamor Wilson, Level Schley, Juanita Jennings, Julian Manjerico, Spenser Granese, and Jon Donahue, among others in other roles in the cast, which also includes, but is not here to, Mariana Trevino.

The plot of A Man Called Otto

It seems as though A Man Called Otto is a motivational tale about the fantastic things that can occur when you let people into your life. The film maintains true-to-the-source material, a “comical and touching” story that was originally a best-seller. Cantankerous Otto Anderson lost his wife and has lived a solitary life for many years. But everyone who knows or interacts with him does not perceive him that way. After being ready to leave his 40-year employment, Otto now spends his days picking on others and complaining about the cruel, cruel world. In response to anything or anyone that upsets his established routines. So, such as his neighbours’ pets urinating on the sidewalk, he frowns more and grins less. Otto has therefore succeeded in turning everyone around him against him. But he is more than just that.

This grumpy older man does have other feelings, but they only appear when he visits his wife’s grave, spends time with her, and expresses his suffering from the outside world. In other words, until a young couple with two kids moves into the neighbourhood. So, Otto has never interacted with a human person. Because Marisol, his new neighbour, is humorous and similarly adamant about not pushing Otto away, unlike the others. So, their abrupt appearance in Otto’s life alters everything. His routine existence completely changes, possibly in an adventurous direction as well. The retired widower begins going through things that are completely unanticipated to him, such as babysitting and getting a pet. And so Otto embarks on a new trip and forges new relationships—things he never even knew he needed.

Trailer

The official trailer for Tom Hanks’ movie A Man Called Otto, which Sony Pictures released in October, is entertaining and comforting. The video introduces the spectator to Otto, the main character, who exhibits a continual sense of annoyance, irritation, and intolerance for everyone and everything around him. He seems to be leading a horrible life—yelling at his neighbours and their pets, insulting mail carriers. When he visits his late wife’s grave and spends hours chatting with her, the trailer reveals that this seemingly vile old guy does have a tender side. The trailer wraps up the story and depicts Otto’s repetitive and lonely existence taking a major turn when a new family comes in and challenges him to live differently. Overall, based on what we can infer from the trailer, A Man Called Otto appears to be a fun, touching, and upbeat tale that the whole family would enjoy.
