“The Witcher”, the hit Netflix fantasy series, has been renewed for season 4. The show is based on the novel of the same name by writer Andrzej Sapkowski. The series tells the tale of a mutant monster hunter named Geralt of Rivia (played by Henry Cavil). It follows Geralt’s journey on his quest to find his place in a world inhabited by humans and monsters, where humans are harrowingly more monstrous than beasts. This update comes just weeks after season 3 wrapped up its production.
When will Season 4 be released?
Season 3 of The Witcher is set to be released in December 2023. The show’s second season adapted the majority of its plot from the book “The Time of Contempt,” and Season 3 did the same. In the upcoming part, Geralt is tasked with the protection of Ciri and his newly united family. The show’s official Twitter account gave out this sneak peek summary for The Witcher 3.
“As monarchs, mages, and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, determined to protect his newly-reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it. Entrusted with Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to discover more about the girl’s untapped powers; instead, they discover they’ve landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line – or risk losing each other forever. “
The Witcher goes on a two-year hiatus between seasons. There is no official release date for The Witcher Season 4 yet. With season 3 scheduled to be released in 2023, we can expect some news on season 4 by 2025.
Who will star in the fourth season?
Most of the original cast will be returning for Witcher Season 4 with one major change. The titular protagonist of the show, The Witcher, aka Geralt of Rivia, who is played by the British actor Henry Cavil, will be replaced by The Hunger Games’ famed actor Liam Hemsworth. This news follows the DC announcement that Henry Cavill will be returning as Superman to the DC universe.
The two actors shared their excitement about this new chapter with their fans on social media.
Henry Cavil shared on Instagram that he is passing the torch of Geralt to Liam. He said,
“Some news to share from the continent…
My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4. In my stead, the fantastic Mr. Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men.
Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.”
Liam also shared his excitement about playing this iconic role on Instagram.
“As a Witcher fan I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia,” he said in a statement. “Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honoured that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure. Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world.”
Liam Hemsworth is the younger brother of Chris Hemsworth, who plays Thor in the MCU. Liam Hemsworth is best known for his roles in The Hunger Games franchise as Gale Hawthorne and Independence Day: Resurgence as Jake Morrison.
Apart from Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia, Netflix hasn’t confirmed any other season 4 cast members. But it’s very likely Anya Chalotra and Freya Allan will return to the show as Yennefer and Ciri.
Is there a Trailer for Season 4?
The new season has just been confirmed, and season 3 is yet to be released. There is definitely a long wait before we can get any sneak peeks into Witcher season 4. We will probably have to wait a little while longer for an official trailer. In the meantime, why not rewatch the first two seasons of the series?
The Witcher universe is expanding and is all set to welcome a prequel titled The Witcher: Blood Origins. Set millennia before the Witcher series, The Prequel will explore the origin of the first Witcher and the events that led to the world of monsters, men, and elves merging into one.
