A League of Their Own: Trailer, Cast, and Release Date

The debate over the best baseball movies is highly subjective and based on personal preferences. Everyone agrees that movies like Moneyball, The Pride of the Yankees, and Bull Durham must be near the top of the list. A League of Their Own, released in 1992, is another gem that must be mentioned. A new TV adaptation of the 1992 sports comedy-drama film is set to be out on Amazon Prime Video. It’s been 30 years since the legendary baseball drama was released on film, and it’s fantastic to see it return in a new incarnation. This is the second reboot, following a five-episode CBS series that was canceled after five episodes in 1993. Like other recent reboots, such as How I Met Your Father, the series will have the same fundamental idea as the original film but new characters and performers.

While the specifics of the following series are not here, both versions were in 1943, the year the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League was present. Following the onset of World War II, a league was to keep baseball alive while men were away fighting overseas. The first installment was a film, but the new version is an eight-episode series by Abbi Jacobson (Broad City) and Mozart in the Jungle executive producer Will Graham. The Rockford Peaches return with new faces and the same sense of humor and heart that won everyone over in the previous film. Here are all the new reboot’s details, including the cast, story, and more.

A League of Their Release date

The TV show will be available exclusively on Amazon Prime Video beginning Friday, August 12. Season 1’s first eight episodes will be available on the same day.

The cast of A League of Their Own

The TV show has been developing in some form since 2017 and was temporarily in pause due to the pandemic. Broad City star Abbi Jacobson (also an executive producer on the project) and Mozart in the Jungle producer Will Graham co-created A League of Their Own. The pilot episode, by Jamie Babbit (But I’m A Cheerleader), was in southern California. Several show episodes were also by Anya Adams, Ayoka Chenzira, Silas Howard, and Katrelle N. Kindred.

Will Graham and Abbi Jacobson co-wrote the series with Michelle Brando, Morgan Gould, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Mfoniso Udofia, and Em Weinstein. On July 11, 2021, filming for A League of Their Own began. Some of the locales used include Greensburg’s Amtrak rail station, Fifth Street Park, and Aliquippa’s Morrell Field. A League of Their Own, premiered in 1992, stars Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Madonna, and a great supporting ensemble. Except for Rosie O’Donnell, who will appear as a guest star in the first season, the new version features an entirely new ensemble.

Other members:

In the original film, she played one of the Rockford Peaches. Abbi Jacobson stars as Carson Shaw, a catcher from a small town who moves to Chicago to pursue her aspirations. Greta, an adventurous first basewoman, is by D’Arcy Carden from A Good Place. Clance, an emerging musician, born and bred in Rockford, is by Gbemisola Ikumelo, best known for Brain in Gear (2019). Max, a pitcher with bad hair, is by Chanté Adams (Bad Hair). While Tom Hanks portrayed Squad Manager in the original 1992 film, Nick Offerman plays Casey “Dove” Porter, the team’s coach and team manager this time around. Saidah Arrika Ekulona, Kate Berlant, Kendall Johnson, Alex Désert, Aaron Jennings, Molly Ephraim, Melanie Field, and Dale Dickey are the recurring cast members.

The plot of A League of Their Own

This time, the plot follows a new generation of women who aspire to play professional baseball during World War II. While the 1992 film A League of Their Own focused on the Rockford Peaches, a pair of sisters and the team’s manager, this adaptation focuses on a different squad than the one portrayed in the film. While the plot’s specifics are unknown, the focus has been wide to include discussions of race and sexuality.

“A League of Their Own evokes the joyful spirit of Penny Marshall’s beloved classic while widening the lens to tell the story of an entire generation of women who dreamed of playing professional baseball. The show takes a deeper look at race and sexuality, following the journey of a whole new ensemble of characters as they carve their paths towards the field, both in the LeagueLeague and outside of it.”

Trailer

While no complete trailer has been out, Prime Video has out a 30-second teaser trailer featuring the first footage from the new series. In the background, Stevie Nicks’ legendary hit “Edge of Seventeen” is playing and featuring a period background and scenes of the ladies going about their daily lives, throwing a fastball directly at a man’s automobile, cutting loose, and, most importantly, getting ready for some baseball. While the previous film reflected life at the time, the current one depicts changing times. It is also clear that some sexual tension is growing among the ladies. However, it is unclear to what extent this manifests itself.
