India’s first rooftop drive-in theatre opens in Mumbai today!

The country’s first rooftop drive-in movie theatre will be open on Friday in Maharashtra’s Mumbai. The drive-in theatre can accommodate around 290 cars. The drive-in theatre will be open at the Mumbai Jio World Drive Mall, which is Mumbai’s recently launched retail hub spread over 17.5 acres in Bandra Kurla Complex, in partnership with Reliance retail. The theatre will be managed and operated by multiplex chain PVR Ltd. The first movie to be displayed at Mumbai’s Jio drive-in theatre will be Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif starrer Sooryavanshi.

As the world is still adjusting to the new normal after the coronavirus pandemic, this amazing idea of the drive-in theatre can be seen as a relatively safer open space for movie buffs. Darshan Mehta the CEO of Jio World Drive told the news agency PTI that this driving theatre is a relatively safer open space that people crave. He said that the large urban areas lack open spaces and most have become urban hangout spots.

He also said that the environment of nice weather, food, and open sky is a critical component. According to the reports of PTI, Darshan Mehta said, “People crave relatively safer open spaces. The movies are there, of course, but the environment of nice weather, open sky, and food becomes a very critical component. It’s all here.”

Further, he said, “To make land in the center of the city a yielding asset, unique use of it must be made. So the concept was that we will make the state-of-the-art Jio World Mall and on top of it we will have the drive-in. Somewhere in this planning, the partnership with PVR got struck.”

While on the other hand Ajay Bijli the chairperson and managing director of PVR Ltd, stated that now movies can be watched anywhere and cinema has become more and more “experimental” in this generation. According to the reports of PTI, Ajay said, “Normally, when you go abroad, you have suburban drive-ins, where there are large patches of land and people just open their bonnets, turn their cars around, and put out their lounge chairs. But a drive-in in the center of the city hasn’t been done before. This is a unique opportunity. We are excited to be part of such a prestigious Mall. The city will be taken by storm.”

A few days ago, when the news of a driving theatre was released by Reliance Industries Limited, Isha Ambani said, “With the Jio World Drive, we are bringing the best retail and entertainment experiences from around the world to Mumbai. It is not just a brand or a place, but a whole new world of personal experiences that will enthrall and engage customers like never before. This vision has led to yet another redefining experience for Mumbaikars with the opening of the Jio Drive-In theatre.”

Here is all the information that you need to know about the Jio drive-in theatre:

  • The cost of the ticket for each car is set to range around ₹1,200. According to the reports, only four people will be permitted inside one vehicle.
  • The Jio Drive-in is actually “one of the biggest cinema screens in the country” as it has dimensions of 24m x 10m.
