Release information, cast list, and more for “The Sandman”

With his long career and numerous best-selling books, Neil Gaiman has become a significant character in dark fantasy and science fiction literature. The Graveyard Book, Good Omens, and The Ocean at the End of the Lane are some of his most well-known books. Still, one of his most famous and adored works is undoubtedly Sandman, a comic book series published by DC Comics that is finally being adapted as a television series, something fans have long wished for. Despite prior attempts, Netflix is making it happen. Although Gaiman’s The Sandman series first debuted in 1989, the plot has since substantially extended and is still a significant part of DC Comics’ current lineup.

The Sandman is close to making its Netflix debut and is executive produced by Gaiman, Allan Heinberg, and David S. Goyer, with Heinberg also serving as the Season 1 showrunner. Here is everything we currently know about The Sandman if you want to learn more about the upcoming programme.

The Sandman Release date

According to a Netflix announcement, The Sandman’s first season will debut on August 5, 2022.

The cast of The Sandman

For The Sandman, Netflix has cast many highly talented actors in numerous significant roles. Of course, Tom Sturridge, whose most notable prior roles include On The Road and Far from the Madding Crowd, plays the titular role, the most significant one. Kirby Howell-Baptiste from A Good Place, David Thewlis from the Harry Potter film series, well-known British comedian and actor Stephen Fry, and Jenna Coleman from Victoria, Charles Dance and Gwendoline Christie of Game of Thrones will co-star. Boyd Holbrook, Mason Alexander Park, Donna Preston, Joely Richardson, Kyo Ra, Razane Jammal, Sandra James-Young, Vivienne Acheampong, Asim Chaudhry, and Sanjeev Bhaskar all appear in The Sandman in supporting roles.

With a long list of credits that includes Ratatouille, Bojack Horseman, the forthcoming Spider-Man animated series, and more, Patton Oswalt is also lending his voice to a crucial role.

The show’s central character will be Dream (Sturridge), a formidable character known as Morpheus, the King of Dreams, Kai’ckul, Oneiros, the Lord of the Dreaming, and of course, Sandman. One of the seven Endless, formidable entities, the Dream is in charge of a particular area of reality. Dream’s realm—the DreamingDreaming—is known to him, and while he is imprisoned for decades, the kingdom disintegrates, and his duties regarding sleep, goals, and nightmares are unfulfilled. Oswalt portrays Dream’s lifelong companion, a raven named Matthew, while Acheampong voices Lucien, Dream’s steadfast comrade who works to keep the realm together while Dream is away.

The plot of The Sandman

The Sandman, Volume 1: Preludes & Nocturnes, which covers Dream’s arrest by Burgess and his occult followers in the early 1900s and his ensuing 105 years in captivity, is said to be the story in the first season of The Sandman. Under the watchful eye of Burgess and his son Alex, a role that has not been in any casting announcements but may be by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, who is as “Alex” on the show’s IMDb page, Dream can eventually escape in 2021. The young actor is probably best for his role in Netflix’s The Haunting of Bly Manor. When Dream returns to his realm of DreamingDreaming after escaping, he finds that everything is out of place, and the Dream is still fragile.

Then Dream embarks on a journey to recover his three power symbols—a ruby, a headpiece, and a pouch of sand—and during this journey, significant figures like Death, Lucifer, and Dee are here. According to information made available thus far by both Netflix and Gaiman, it appears that Season 1 of The Sandman will also incorporate elements from The Doll’s House plot. This will involve Dream embarking on a new journey to find some of the creations that have escaped DreamingDreaming and showcasing two of his Endless siblings, Desire and Despair, and Dream himself. Given the different formats, the television adaptation of The Sandman may need to make some changes to the original plot. Still, since Gaiman is executive producing, fans should anticipate that the programme will always maintain the spirit of the comic series.
