Season 3 of Star Trek: Lower Decks: Everything We Know

Fans won’t wait long to witness another outstanding Star Trek: Strange New Worlds production once the outstanding first season finale airs in July 2022. The Star Trek brand may be taking a little pause from its big-screen plans, but streaming activity is still humming away. Even though live-action programs like Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard generally attract the biggest headlines and the most viewers, one particular animated series has quietly established itself as one of the best and most fun additions to the famous brand. The popular animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks was produced by Rick and Morty creator and Emmy Award winner Mike McMahan for Paramount+.

The ninth episode of the expanded Star Trek Universe, developed by executive producer Alex Kurtzman debuted in 2020. Lower Decks is the first animated installment of the Star Trek brand since Star Trek: The Animated Shows debuted in the 1970s. It’s also the first comedy with multiple allusions to past Star Trek series. C.B.S. Eye Animation Productions create the program with Roddenberry Entertainment, Secret Hideout, Important Science, and the Titmouse animation studio.

From its tone and humor to its fundamental aesthetics, Lower Decks has taken pride in the role of being Star Trek’s odd cousin. Thanks to its creator, Lower Decks has a humorous edge that makes it more like Rick and Morty than Star Trek: The Animated Series. As it runs concurrently with the events of 2002’s Star Trek: Nemesis, Lower Decks, which takes its name from a well-known episode of 1987’s Star Trek: The Next Generation, offers a new perspective on the utopia of the 24th century, primarily from the perspective of those who have the worst jobs on an advanced spaceship.

Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 3Release date

On Thursday, August 25, 2022, only on Paramount+, the third season of the original Star Trek half-hour animated comedy series will premiere. The final nine episodes of the season’s ten total will then air once a week on Thursdays.

Paramount+ announced the release date and a brand-new poster with the arresting image of Ensign Rutherford’s skull blasting blue and pink light. Like Season 2’s key art for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, the season’s key art pays homage to the poster for the 1984 film Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. Brad Boiler, Ensign Tendi, and Beckett Mariner are positioned on either side of Rutherford, who our rowdy group of lower deckers is following. Above all, the U.S.S. Cerritos and a Klingon Bird of Prey are at war.

The cast of Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 3

The crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos is represented in the Star Trek: Lower Decks cast by Tawny Newsome (Space Force), Jack Quaid (The Boys), Noel Wells (Craig of the Creek), Ensign Tendi, and Ensign Rutherford, voiced by Eugene Cordero (Loki). The ship’s bridge crew is voiced by Dawnn Lewis (Carmen Sandiego), Jerry O’Connell (Justice League: Thorne of Atlantis), and Gillian Vigman (Roswell, New Mexico) as Captain Carol Freeman, Commander Jack Ransom, and Doctor T’Ana.

The plot of Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 3

In the Star Trek universe, Star Trek: Lower Decks takes place in the late 24th century when Earth is a member of the United Federation of Planets, a multi-species organization. The military and exploration arm of the Federation is called Starfleet. The U.S.S. Cerritos, one of Starfleet’s less important starships, wanders the cosmos making contact with alien cultures in Star Trek: Lower Decks. Unlike other Star Trek series, where the main protagonists are starship captains or other senior officers, Lower Decks focuses on the missions and exploits of the lower deckers—low-ranking officers with menial occupations. The Captain and other senior staff members only play supporting roles in Lower Decks. In Season 3 of Star Trek: Lower Decks, Cerrito’s ensigns are tested in humorous ways as they explore the universe, assist civilizations and new life, and preserve their appearance without entirely exposing themselves. Starting with a spectacular resolution to Season 2’s suspenseful cliffhanger finale, the U.S.S.

The ongoing Pakled story from the first two seasons will continue in the third season. According to McMahan, the third season would start elevating the lower deckers by showing how each one takes a different road to become the characters he wanted them to be at the show’s conclusion. The relationship between Beckett Mariner and Captain Freeman would change due to the Captain’s incarceration because the two had become closer during the second season. The season’s first few episodes introduce new personal missions for the significant heroes. Brad Boimler’s experiences from the first two seasons will lead him down a new path, D’Vana Tendi starts a new job in the sciences section, and the mystery surrounding Sam is still unsolved.

Trailer

Paramount+ unveiled the new Lower Decks Season 3 video at the Star Trek Universe panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2022. The surprising conclusion of Season 2 marked the startling arrest of Captain Freeman for a crime she didn’t commit, and things were looking a little bleak for the U.S.S. Cerritos crew on Lower Decks when we last left them. As Season 3 begins, Mariner, Boimler, Rutherford, and Tendi must devise a strategy for establishing Captain Freeman’s innocence while disturbing Starfleet as little as possible. They must do this while still seeking out adventure.

The recently released video for the upcoming season of Lower Decks teases a tonne of strange and significant events to come. As usual, the crew members are up to some hilarious antics while carrying out the menial tasks and hard work that come with being an Ensign in Starfleet. To the pleasure of many fans, the trailer’s closing teases the fascinating link to a surprising era of Star Trek history, Deep Space Nine.
