The Walt Disney Company has a history of turning its innovative attractions into full-length motion pictures. The Pirates of the Caribbean film series, which consisted of five films and gave rise to a contemporary pop culture hero in the form of Captain Jack Sparrow, is unquestionably the most well-known and successful example. Ever since, Disney has sought to adapt its theme park rides into movies, as evidenced by The Country Bears (2002), Tomorrowland (2015), and Jungle Cruise, to name a few (2021). With Hawkeye (2021) directors Bert & Bertie slated to create a Big Thunder Mountain Railroad-based movie, the idea is still going strong. The Haunted Mansion is the one ride at Walt Disney World that should be an easy adaptation.
The Haunted Mansion, starring Eddie Murphy, was a 2003 Disney attempt to cash in on the well-liked attraction. Its iconic images and surprisingly rich backstory should be the ideal choice for a feature film. You may anticipate that his interpretation of the voyage would be pretty funny, with a comic like Murphy playing the central part. Although the ride has always had a very sarcastic sense of humour, the movie version lacked the dangerous allure of the ride and focused too much on the jokes, not to mention excluding classic characters like the Hat Box Ghost and the Black Cat.
Former Disneyland employee and Dear White People (2014) director Justin Simien plans to create his cinematic adaptation of the popular attraction, bringing a respected team of creatives and a terrific ensemble on board. It appears to be a very intriguing adventure-horror combination based on what was during their attendance at this year’s D23 Expo. Please continue reading below to learn more about what was at D23 behind closed doors and everything else we currently know.
