Sudden incidents such as robbery are something that can scare many people. It is understandable and common for many to just freeze or choose to stay away from when suddenly such a situation occurs.
Well, a young man witnesses a robbery in Ohio and is seen getting into action to catch the thief and help the woman. Also, the local police force recognized his efforts, and the ‘hero’ for helping the 87-year-old woman, who was robbed also received an award. Earlier this month when the octogenarian identified as Pat Goins was shopping at a Kroger grocery store, that’s when suddenly a man appeared to snatch her purse in the checkout line. The woman cried for help and listening to her, a Samaritan, 27-year-old Deshawn Pressley quickly chased the offender.
He tackled him in the parking lot of the store and the entire incident was captured on the CCTV camera of the store. The CCTV footage showed Pressley quickly catching up to the robber and knocking him on the ground. Then he retrieves the senior woman’s purse. As per the reports by Butler County Sheriff’s Office, Pressley “wrestled with the suspect” identified as Derek Vaughn, 58, until law enforcement arrived. The sheriff’s office stated that Vaughn was charged with robbery. The thief is also charged with a third-degree felony, and theft, a fifth-degree felony due to the elderly woman’s age.
The police chief not only praised Pressley for his work and action in helping the woman but also praised him for not letting the suspect go. They also gave him a Citizen’s Award in a respected ceremony where Pressley was reunited with Goins and the sweet bond between the senior woman. This incident and action done by the young man caught the attention of many social media users. “I’m glad that he received this honor,” Goins told WXIS, “because he’s my hero.”
Stating that they would continue with their sweet friendship, Goins said they have got a dinner date scheduled too. Pressley told Fox News after the ceremony that he was with his 1-year-old daughter. That is when he struck up a conversation with Goins moments before the attempted robbery and the two went into separate checkout lines. Pressley stated that the suspect attempted to steal the purse of the elderly woman. “I heard her screaming and yelling … it was the yell that I need help,” he said. “And I just turned around and did what I needed to do as a citizen.”
He also said that his grandma, who raised him after his mother died, had taught him all the values to help others in need. People on social media platforms were so proud of him and praised the young man for his prompt actions. We always hear about helping others in need but this man did it by helping the senior woman.
